An Australian woman is suing her psychiatrist for professional negligence after a failed treatment for her gender dysphoria that ended in the removal of her breasts and uterus, as reported by the Sydney Morning Herald.

The woman, Jay Langadinos, came to see psychiatrist Dr. Patrick Toohey in May 2010 because of her gender dysphoria. He then prescribed her testosterone as a cross-sex hormone.

In February 2012, Langadinos came to see him the second time and Dr. Toohey gave the green light for her to undergo surgical breast removal. The procedure was performed in April the same year, and then in November she had her uterus removed as well.

Since her gender dysphoria did not subside after the procedures, rather the psychological problems continued to increase, Langadinos sought the help of another psychiatrist. In the course of the treatment with the other doctor, she realized in 2016 that her trans-affirmative decision and the removal of her genitals had been a mistake; in 2020 she stopped taking cross-sex hormones and resumed her female identity.

Langadinos accused Dr. Toohey of “failing to take precautions” or obtain a second opinion. She said the therapy and “the loss of her breasts, uterus, fallopian tubes and ovaries” inflicted irreversible damage to her.

Meanwhile, she attributes her gender dysphoria and adolescent idea of actually being a male to her difficult family circumstances. “Knowing that I can’t have children is absolutely horrible,” the young woman summed up her situation to the Sydney Morning Herald.
