In a shocking failure of child protection, convicted transgender murderer Reginald “Regina” Arthurell, 79, was allowed to live with two vulnerable foster children aged 12 and 14 in Western Sydney for months, despite the New South Wales government knowing about the arrangement since December 2025.
The situation only came to light after a radio whistleblower exposed it on March 9, 2026, prompting Arthurell’s immediate removal from the home. Arthurell, formerly known as Reginald and now identifying as female, has a horrific criminal history: stabbing his stepfather to death in 1974, bashing a man during a robbery in 1981, and beating his former partner to death in 1991 while on parole.
Released in 2020 after serving time, he moved into the foster home late last year, where police visited in February for a domestic violence incident but took no action regarding his presence. Families and Communities Minister Kate Washington apologized on radio, calling it “entirely unacceptable” and the “worst mistake” she’s seen in her portfolio. She launched an urgent review, admitting multiple departmental failures.
Opposition leader Mark Speakman demanded Washington’s resignation, stating: “The minister should be sacked or resign.” Critics blasted the government’s incompetence in safeguarding children entrusted to state care.
