French authorities have arrested nine suspects in the fatal beating of 23-year-old right wing activist Quentin Deranque in Lyon, amid a probe into voluntary homicide and aggravated assault.
Deranque died from severe brain injuries last week after being attacked by at least six assailants on the sidelines of a protest against a left-wing politician speaking at a university.
Deranque was protecting members of the anti-immigration collective Némésis, which fights violence against Western women. Némésis has blamed the killing on Jeune Garde, an anti-fascist youth group co-founded by radical-left La France Insoumise (LFI) MP Raphaël Arnault.
A march in Deranque’s honor is set for Lyon next Saturday, following a minute of silence in parliament.
