The Archbishop of Vaduz, Wolfgang Haas, has canceled the traditional opening service of the state parliamentary sessions in protest against the introduction of “marriage for all” pushed by the Liechtenstein parliament. He justified his decision on December 10 in the Vobiscum: Official Gazette for the Archdiocese of Vaduz. The corresponding message is also published on the Catholic Swiss media portal kath.ch.

Accordingly, the celebration of the so-called “Holy Spirit Office” at the opening of the sessions no longer makes sense. His church-official clarification against the political introduction of same-sex “marriage” to the Liechtenstein parliament, whose members “all belong to the Catholic Church,” had “not achieved the hoped-for effect.”

“By a large majority–despite and contrary to reasonable and lawful guidelines–the motion to draft a corresponding bill was referred to the government, i.e. voted for the introduction of this pseudo-marriage, which contradicts both natural feeling, reasonable natural law and, in particular, the Christian understanding of man as it corresponds to the divine order of creation,” the Archbishop continued. A liturgical celebration would no longer make sense “in view of the parliamentary behavior of the vast majority of our state parliament members in an essential matter of Christian ethics.”

Regarding homosexuality, the Catholic Church teaches the following in the Catechism of the Catholic Church, paragraph 2357: “Based on Sacred Scripture, which it calls a terrible aberration, Church tradition has always declared ‘that homosexual acts are not in themselves in order’. They violate the natural law, because the transmission of life remains excluded in the sexual act. They do not spring from a true affective and sexual need of completion. They are in no way to be condoned.”

Based on this, the Catholic Church rejects the legal recognition of same-sex relationships.
