A 23-year-old woman who survived the 2016 Islamist attack on Brussels airport has had herself killed in Belgium under euthanasia legislation.

Since the terrorist attack, Shanti de Corte has suffered from severe depression as well as post-traumatic stress disorder with panic attacks. Together with her classmates, she was in the airport’s departure lounge as a 17-year-old when the lounge was hit by several bomb explosions. The attack killed 32 people and injured more than 300 others. De Corte remained physically unharmed, but in the years following the attack, despite psychological care, she experienced no recovery from the psychological consequences. In 2018 and 2020, she unsuccessfully tried to kill herself.

In the course of an interview with her mother, it has now been revealed that Shanti de Corte was killed in Belgium on May 7, 2022, at her own request, in the presence of her family.

Euthanasia is allowed in Belgium. People willing to be euthanized must be in “a medically hopeless condition of constant and intolerable physical or mental suffering which cannot be relieved and is due to a serious and incurable disorder caused by disease or accident.” Two psychiatrists must examine the suffering patients to see if they are unaffected by the decision to euthanize.

In the present case, two psychiatrists had examined de Corte and granted her request.

However, the Antwerp prosecutor’s office has launched an investigation into the case. A neurologist at a local clinic, Paul Deltenre, stated that not all treatment options had been fully exhausted in treating de Cortes. The decision to kill de Corte under the scheme was “premature,” he said.
