European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen used the opening of Brussels Pride Week to post a declaration of institutional support on X, writing that the EU Commission is “PROUD” and that Pride is “a celebration of love, identity, courage and community.” The rainbow flag has been raised on the Commission building and will fly there for the duration of the week.
Von der Leyen emphasized that the Commission works year-round to ensure Europe remains a space where everyone can live “freely, openly, and authentically.”
The display comes as Brussels continues to use legal and institutional pressure to force LGBT ideology onto member states. After the Commission filed a lawsuit against Hungary’s Child Protection Law — which banned the promotion of homosexuality and gender ideology to minors — the European Court of Justice ruled the legislation violates fundamental EU rights. It remains to be seen whether the new Péter Magyar-led government will repeal the law.
The EU Commission flying the Pride flag on its headquarters is not a neutral act. It is a declaration of institutional ideology — one being actively enforced through lawsuits against member states whose citizens voted for child protection laws. Von der Leyen speaks of living “freely and authentically” while using the courts to override the democratic decisions of countries like Hungary that chose to protect children from age-inappropriate content.
