Nigel Rees, the creator and host for 46 years of the BBC radio show “Quote…Unquote,” has called it quits from the network. Why? Because of the BBC’s slavish commitment to the woke agenda.
As reported in the British Sunday Times, Rees stated: “We had prescriptions to have diverse groups and disabled guests. I didn’t agree with it all but I went along with it because I had to. It came from upstairs, and it seemed a general priority.” Eventually, however, this identity-politics policy became too much for him. “I am not willing to go on having my choices interfered with in order to tick boxes in the name of diversity and representation. It is difficult having it enforced for the sake of it. It is also patronizing, not least to the people who don’t want to be on because they feel they are ticking a box,” Rees declared. So he quit.
And Rees was firm in his decision to leave. “There was nothing the BBC could say to persuade me to change my mind. It had reached crunch point,” he stated. He added that he hoped he did not “sound like an ‘anti-woke’ backbench Tory [the less left party in Great Britain] MP (which I am far from being)….”
Rees is the second major person in a month to leave a top network in the Anglosphere. Tara Henley, a veteran producer at the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC), likewise quit her position at the CBC over the network’s woke agenda. Her reason from leaving was almost identical to Rees’s: “It used to be that I was the one furthest to the left in any newsroom. I am now easily the most conservative, frequently sparking tension by questioning identity politics… To work at the CBC now is to accept the idea that race is the most significant thing about a person, and that some races are more relevant to the public conversation than others. It is, in my newsroom, to fill out racial profile forms for every guest you book; to actively book more people of some races and less of others.”
While it is disheartening to hear how leftist major networks like the BBC and the CBC truly are, it is encouraging to learn that leaders at those organizations are finally taking a stand by calling out their network’s commitment to the woke agenda and then quitting them. Let’s hope that the actions taken by Nigel Rees and Tara Henley will give heart to other people in the media to do likewise. As more people learn the truth about what is happening, they can demand that those networks change or, if they won’t, stop listening to them. The light of truth always dispels the darkness of deception.
