Amid a sweeping $300 million budget cut triggered by reductions in federal research grants under President Trump’s administration, Vanderbilt University Medical Center (VUMC) made the decision in late June 2025 to terminate several support positions in its “LGBTQ Health Program”. As part of these reductions, VUMC laid off five employees connected to the LGBTQ Health Program—including roles like the program’s director, assistant director, and the “Trans Buddy Program” coordinator. The Trans Buddy initiative, which paired gender confused patients with LGBT activist volunteers, was consequently halted.
Programs such as this initiative are failing across the country thanks to the Trump administrations efforts to end DEI programs and fight against “illegal and immoral discrimination” and “immense public waste.” Both the California based Center for Trans Youth and Developement and Stanford University have shut down programs which irreversably “transitioned” minors.
A growing body of evidence makes clear that “affirming” gender confusion—especially in children—can cause lasting harm. Young people do not possess the cognitive maturity, emotional stability, or life experience to fully grasp the irreversible consequences of life-altering surgeries or chemical interventions. Research consistently shows that over 80 percent of children experiencing gender dysphoria naturally grow out of it by late adolescence. Yet so-called “reassignment” procedures have failed to eliminate, and often worsen, the struggles of those with gender confusion—leaving them at elevated risk for self-harm and suicide. The steps taken by the Trump Administration are vital for combating the dangers of transgender ideology.
