The United States has conducted military strikes in Venezuela, leading to the arrest of President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores. President Donald Trump confirmed the operation, stating it was carried out in coordination with U.S. law enforcement to address Maduro’s role in drug-related activities.
Explosions were reported in Caracas, with strikes targeting locations in Miranda, Aragua, and La Guaira states, as Venezuelan officials sought verification of Maduro’s condition. Senator Mike Lee noted that Secretary of State Marco Rubio indicated Maduro would be tried in the U.S., with no additional ground forces needed.
Deputy Secretary Christopher Landau described the development as a potential new start for Venezuela. Attorney General Pam Bondi emphasized the existing indictments from the Southern District of New York, charging the couple with narco-terrorism, cocaine conspiracy, and possession of machine guns and destructive devices.
The strikes occur amid ongoing U.S. actions against Venezuelan drug trafficking, including recent seizures of oil tankers and operations against smuggling boats. This follows Maduro’s recent offer to discuss anti-trafficking measures.
