A transgender man who viciously stabbed his two young children in their Alberta home has been sentenced to a mere five years in prison, a punishment that falls far short of justice for the innocent victims and highlights the failures of Canada’s lenient legal system. On February 19, 2025, 35-year-old Michael Joseph Attwood, who identifies as a woman named “Alice” and uses she/they/he pronouns, attacked his 7-year-old son and 8-year-old daughter with a serrated kitchen knife in Grande Prairie.
The children were assaulted in their bedrooms. The daughter suffered a horrific injury, with her throat slashed so severely that her esophagus was 75% severed. She was airlifted to Stollery Children’s Hospital in Edmonton for emergency surgery and later transferred to Alberta Children’s Hospital in Calgary, where she required a feeding tube for months. Attwood, who describes himself as a “genderfluid queerdo,” cleaned the knife and called police after the assault. He pleaded guilty to aggravated assault.
On February 21, 2026, an Alberta judge sentenced him to five years, crediting time served. The Crown prosecutor sought 5 1/2 years, while the defense requested three to four. Justice J. Shira called the sentence the “strongest possible condemnation,” emphasizing deterrence, but rejected a mental illness defense. A forensic psychiatrist found no serious mental illness at the time, though Attwood showed borderline personality traits and emotional instability.
The defense claimed a psychotic episode from cannabis use to suppress gender identity, but the judge ruled that while it may explain the behavior, it does not justify it or absolve responsibility. Attwood chose to use cannabis regularly despite caring for the children, manifesting recklessness. This lenient sentence for such a barbaric act against innocent children exemplifies the moral decay in a system that turns a blind eye to transgender insanity.
