Violent convicted criminal Tremaine “Tremayne” Deon Carroll, who identifies as a transgender woman, is under indictment for rape and has been moved from a women’s correctional institute back to a men’s prison in California. Carroll, 51, is a biological male with a lengthy history of criminal activity. Since being moved to the women’s facility under a new state law that allows transgender prisoners to be housed in facilities aligning with their gender identity, Carroll has been accused of attacking a biological female inmate in the shower and raping her.
Women’s rights activists argue that Carroll’s case exemplifies the dangers of this new law, stressing that it puts biological women in correctional facilities at risk. Advocacy group Women’s Liberation Front is currently battling the law in court, arguing that it contravenes the US Constitution.
Carroll’s criminal history includes multiple offenses, including kidnapping and robbery. While in prison, Carroll has repeatedly been found culpable of serious disciplinary violations. After the law allowing gender-based transfers was passed, Carroll started identifying as a woman and was transferred to a women’s facility in 2021. The rape charges brought against him concern an incident reported in January of this year.
