To the Left, if the NFL fires a minority coach, it must be racist

To these liberals, it didn’t matter that Culley and Flores had been unsuccessful coaches; all that mattered was their race, not whether their teams won games.

For years now the Left has been repeatedly telling us that when someone applies for a job, promotion, government grant, or college admission, that person’s race and ethnicity should be ignored; all that should be considered are their qualifications. And the Left is right in saying this. Why? Because race and ethnicity are simply irrelevant in determining if a person is qualified or not; indeed, any inherent quality such as race, ethnicity, or gender should be deemed irrelevant when making decisions regarding hiring and the like.

Yet the Left does not seriously believe that merit should govern in America; for them, race, ethnicity, sex, and other irrelevant characteristics must be especially considered when hiring, promoting, giving out grants, and admitting to college. Indeed, the Left is an unwavering supporter of quotas. Having the right amount of certain types of people is all that matters; if a company or university does not have the right proportion of races, ethnicities, sexes, etc., then that it must bigoted and must be unfairly discriminating, even if there is no evidence of such.

This hypocrisy of the Left on this issue can be clearly seen in regard to their recent remarks regarding the National Football League. After the end of the 2021-22 regular season in the NFL, numerous team owners fired their unsuccessful coaches. Among the coaches fired were Brian Flores of the Miami Dolphins and David Culley of the Houston Texans. In three years with the Dolphins, Flores had an overall losing record (24-25) and failed to take the Dolphins to a single playoff game. Culley was fired after just one season as his team was a disastrous 4-13.

Looking at things objectively, the owners appeared justified in firing Flores and Culley. Yet there was an immediate outcry by the left after their firings. Why? Because Flores and Culley are Black.

In an article entitled “NFL has 1 Black head coach after Texans fire David Culley, league faces social media firestorm” on Foxnews.com, the author remarks how the race of the coaches was the most important aspect of their firings:

The Houston Texans came under fire Thursday [January 13] when the team fired head coach David Culley after one season, leaving only one Black head coach in the NFL…At the start of Monday, the NFL didn’t have many Black head coaches to begin with. The Pittsburgh Steelers have Mike Tomlin, Brian Flores was with the Miami Dolphins and Culley with the Texans. The Dolphins fired Flores on Monday. Washington’s Ron Rivera and the New York Jets’ Robert Saleh are the other minority head coaches outside of Culley.

The same focus on race appeared everywhere. As Sarah Bishop of ESPN wrote:

Culley…was the lone Black head coach hired last offseason and was one of three Black coaches in the NFL this season. His firing leaves the Pittsburgh Steelers‘ Mike Tomlin as the NFL’s only Black head coach, as the Miami Dolphins fired Brian Flores earlier this week.

Immediately the liberal woke mob attributed the firings to a racist NFL. David Ancho, an analyst on Fox Sports 1, tweeted:

With the firing of David Culley, there’s currently 1 black head coach @NFL. There are 32 teams and 78% of the players are black. David Culley was set up to fail. #Texans.

ESPN commentator Tony Kornheiser said:

It is hard not to go to the racial aspect right here and right now. It is undeniable that Black coaches don’t get as much time as white coaches to build a team or reverse the order of a team or something like that and you see with Culley getting fired early and Brian Flores with two winning seasons getting fired in Miami. By the same token, every once in a while there’s a Freddie Kitchens (Cleveland Browns), a white coach gets fired early. (The Giants’) Joe Judge gets fired early… Here’s Houston and Miami hiring Black coaches. Not everybody does that, not everybody in the league has done that, and they at least did that.

Comedian Reese Waters tweeted:

After the firings of David Culley & Brian Flores there is now just one Black head coach in the NFL: Mike Tomlin. And he had to never have a losing season in 15 years to do it.

Sports commentator Skip Bayless likewise focused on race in his tweet:

Wait, David Culley…got fired after ONE YEAR? He actually did a pretty good job under the circumstances. Wait, now Mike Tomlin is THE LAST REMAINING BLACK HEAD COACH IN THE NFL?? Impossibly wrong in 2022.

To these liberals, it didn’t matter that Culley and Flores had been unsuccessful coaches; all that mattered was their race, not whether their teams won games.

It is a tragedy that in America in 2022 liberals are so focused on race and other irrelevant inherent characteristics that have no bearing on a person’s competence. The only way our country will ever be truly egalitarian is when people specifically refuse to consider anything but merit in hiring, promoting, giving out contracts, university admissions, and every other aspect of life. One guaranteed way to keep a country from becoming color-blind, ethnicity-blind, and sex-blind is to keep on focusing on race, ethnicity, and sex. It is time for America to go down a different path.
