Spain’s lower house of parliament has approved a bill in its first reading that would further facilitate access to abortion in Spain.
According to the bill, abortion would also be possible in public clinics in the future. In addition, from now on underage girls over the age of 16 would be able to have abortions without parental consent. Also, female employees who suffer from menstrual cramps should be allowed to take time off with continued pay. Spain would thus be the first European country in which women suffering from menstrual pain could stay at home on a paid basis.
In the vote on the bill introduced by the Ministry of Equality, 190 deputies voted for and 154 against; there were five abstentions.
Next, the Spanish upper house must approve the bill, after which it will again be considered by the lower house.
