Novak Đoković: I’m sad that sport has become a business through betting bars

There are betting bars at every corner in Serbia, just as there used to be bakeries everywhere. Many people do sports betting, putting themselves and their family's financial security at risk by betting on a tennis match or a game, Đoković said.

Novak Đoković, the hero of the Serbian nation, has lived to see his words ignored by the Serbian public.

In one of his monologues, he didn’t talk about his victories, he wasn’t funny as he usually is, he didn’t talk about the atmosphere in New York… Instead, he talked about a topic that is very serious. He talked long and well. He mentioned betting bars and the government. Enough so that his words are not conveyed by the media.

– I’m sad that sport has become a business through betting bars. There are betting bars at every corner in Serbia, just as there used to be bakeries everywhere. They have become a part of life, many people do sports betting, putting themselves and their family’s financial security at risk by betting on a tennis match or a game, Đoković said, as reported by Sport Club .

– If this topic is brought up, they will probably tell me, “What are you talking about, you are a multimillionaire”? I’ll probably be criticized for talking about it, being a rich man. Betting bars are on every television, they are dominant, the fastest way to make money. Either this problem is not seen, or it is covered up, and ignored. The government is not trying to regulate it, to find an acceptable model for society, youth and sports. We have to ask ourselves what kind of environment our children will grow up in. We should be talking about this. We don’t want it to be a taboo, Đoković concluded.
