Netherlands eliminates five-day cooling-off period before abortion

The amendment is scheduled to take effect in January 2023.

The First Chamber of the Dutch Parliament has approved a bill that removes the mandatory five-day waiting period between counseling and undergoing abortion. Earlier, the bill had already been approved by the Second Chamber, which is actually the House of Representatives (on which iFamNews has reported).

There were dissenting votes from conservative and Christian parties regarding the decision. However, according to the First Chamber, the majority in the provincial parliament believed “the abolition of the mandatory reflection period” would “do justice to women’s autonomy and their right to self-determination.”

The amendment is scheduled to take effect in January 2023.
