Former US President Joe Biden has stated that he would consider withdrawing from the presidential race if he were struck by a serious medical condition. In an interview with BET’s Ed Gordon, Biden said he initially intended to be a transitional candidate but hadn’t anticipated the political landscape becoming so divided. He noted that despite his age, he believed that he demonstrated the capability to deliver results for the country and was hesitant to abandon that.
Yet, the discussion around Biden’s electoral exit has gained momentum recently. Representative Adam Schiff of California is the latest among 20 Congressional Democrats to call for Biden’s withdrawal from the race, citing the need for a new leader. Following Biden’s controversial performance at the June 27 debate, even his staunch media allies raised questions about his viability as a candidate.
Biden’s attempts to reassure his base through media appearances and conference calls have seemingly failed to quiet the concerns. Reports of a disorganized call with the House Progressive Caucus, where Biden appeared to lose his train of thought multiple times, have added to his woes. Despite the mounting criticism and calls for his exit, Biden’s resolve to stay in the race appears undeterred, unless forced by health issues.
