During the past weekend, a derby between AZ Alkmaar and Feyenoord was played in Holland, which the Rotterdam team won 3:1, and then some things not related to the game itself came to light during the match. Namely, Feyenoord captain Orkun Kökçü refused to wear the captain’s armband in rainbow colors.

Kökçü made such decision for what he said was religious reasons, therefore Feyenoord were forced to change their captain for this game.

The Turk was the most notable player in the match, scoring the first goal for his team and assisting in the third, which earned him the best player of the match award; however, he later issued a statement explaining his refusal to wear the armband.

I think it’s important to emphasize that I respect everyone regardless of religion, background or preferences. I believe that everyone should do whatever they want. I understand well the importance of this action, but my religious beliefs do not define me as the right person for it. I don’t feel comfortable wearing this kind of captain’s armband. I know some people will be disappointed. Therefore, I hope that my choice for religious reasons will be respected.

Feyenoord were forced to change their captain for that game, so Gerno Troner wore the armband.
