Winfried Kretschmann, the head of the Baden-Württemberg state in Germany, has rejected the use of so-called gender language in schools, the Bild reports referring to the Deutsche Presse-Agentur.
“Schools must adhere to what the Council for German Orthography prescribes. Otherwise, we won’t have a uniform spelling system in the end,” said the Green politician. It’s bad enough that so many elementary school students can’t read, he said. “You don’t have to make it harder for them by writing things in school that you don’t even speak.”
Kretschmann criticized not only the overloading of the German language with anglicisms, but also gender language in particular: “It would be good if we were more creative again overall with our own language instead of using colons and underscores to write things that are not speakable.” Even if language genderization can no longer be reversed, one should “at least not overdo it”. Language “cannot be politically commanded,” he said.
