Facebook: religious views, political affiliation and sexual preferences to be deleted from profiles

Newer social networks have opted for a more minimalist approach in terms of user profile information, and Facebook is following suit.

Currently, users can add information about their political and religious beliefs, as well as sexual orientation, in their “About” tab on Facebook, but the social network will eliminate that option, Breitbart reported.

Facebook explained that this will make the platform easier to navigate and use.

“As part of our efforts to make Facebook easier to navigate and use, we are removing a handful of profile fields: Interested in, Religious Views, Political Views and Address,” the spokesperson said in a statement. “We are sending notifications to people who have filled out these fields to inform them that these fields will be removed. This change does not affect users’ ability to share this information about themselves elsewhere on Facebook.”

While Facebook, one of the first dominant social networks, allowed its users to display a wide range of information on their page, newer social networks have opted for a more minimalist approach with short biographies for users. TechCrunch noted that Facebook’s comparatively extensive profiles are a “somewhat outdated” feature.
