A powerful new coalition has emerged in Washington, D.C., committed to dismantling the Supreme Court’s flawed 2015 Obergefell ruling. Spearheaded by Katy Faust at the Them Before Us children’s rights organization, the coalition seeks to highlight the profound harm done to children when same-sex “marriage” became law. As Faust asserts, the landmark decision elevated adult desires over children’s best interests.
At a conference session hosted by National Conservatism, speakers emphasized that legalizing same-sex “marriage” has had damaging consequences for children. They argue Obergefell has stripped away essential protections—abandoning the universal longing for a mother and father in favor of legally sanctioned adult preferences. Children, they contend, have become pawns in a broader redefinition of parenthood.
Faust pointed to real-life tragedies rooted in the ruling’s logic. She cited cases where children, created through surrogacy or IVF, ended up in perilous situations—like infants being held in a human-sized cage, or twins cared for by a 74-year-old man. In each instance, Obergefell enabled legal custody devoid of biological or moral connection.
She also detailed how key legal presumptions, like paternity or maternal primacy, have been upended. Under current law, same-sex couples claiming parenthood via intent can sever the natural ties children have to their biological mothers or fathers—even before birth. According to Faust, this shift erodes the legal recognition of the parent-child bond, treating children as commodities to be assigned rather than lives to be protected.
This initiative is about defending children from a system that prioritizes ideology over their welfare. Faust implores conservatives to redefine who the real victims are in this debate. By insisting “children deserve a mother and a father,” the coalition aims to reclaim true parenthood and insist the Court choose between natural families and state-imposed constructs.
