{"id":8076,"date":"2020-02-18T09:00:00","date_gmt":"2020-02-18T14:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ifamnews.com\/?p=8076"},"modified":"2020-02-16T12:52:41","modified_gmt":"2020-02-16T17:52:41","slug":"iof-statement-to-un-ambassadors-on-the-commission-on-the-status-of-women","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ifamnews.com\/en\/iof-statement-to-un-ambassadors-on-the-commission-on-the-status-of-women","title":{"rendered":"IOF Statement to UN Ambassadors on the Commission on the Status of Women"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p> <em>The International Organization for the Family (IOF) has provided the following statement, co-signed by organizations from around the world, to over 150 United Nations ambassadors and their missions in anticipation of the 64th session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW64) to be held March 9-20, 2020. The event will commemorate the 25<sup>th<\/sup> anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action (Beijing+25) in this, the 75<sup>th<\/sup> anniversary year of the founding of the United Nations<\/em>. <\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>The convergence of CSW64 and Beijing+25 with\nthe 75<sup>th<\/sup> anniversary of the United Nations calls to mind the\nprinciples memorialized soon after its founding in the Universal Declaration of\nHuman Rights, which Eleanor Roosevelt prophetically hoped would become \u201cthe\ninternational Magna Carta\u201d of all people everywhere. Proclaiming \u201cthe inherent dignity\u201d and \u201cequal and inalienable\nrights of all members of the human family,\u201d including \u201cthe equal rights of men\nand women,\u201d the Declaration enumerates, inter alia, the right to\nlive free from slavery, torture, and degrading treatment, the right to own\nproperty, the right to receive equal pay for equal work, and the right to be\neducated\u2014rights all too often denied to women around the world. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But\nthe urgent and laudable work of protecting the rights of women must proceed in\na way that does not unintentionally undermine\nthe most important of their \u201cequal and inalienable rights\u201d by failing to\nrecognize the God-given uniqueness of woman and man and of their marital union\nto form what the Declaration recognizes as society\u2019s \u201cnatural and fundamental\ngroup unit,\u201d namely, the family. Referring to this divinely ordained union, Pope\nFrancis has spoken of \u201cthe complementarity between man and woman,\u201d which \u201clies\nat the foundation of marriage and the family\u2026. Children have a right to grow up\nin a family with a father and a mother capable of creating a suitable\nenvironment for the child\u2019s growth and emotional development.\u201d This \u201cunion of\nman and woman in marriage,\u201d he continues, is \u201ca unique, natural, fundamental\nand beautiful good for people, families, communities and societies.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is also the greatest guarantor of human rights for both women and men. In the words of Michael Novak, former ambassador to the UN Commission on Human Rights, \u201cThe family is the seedbed of economic skills, money habits, attitudes toward work, and the arts of financial independence. The family is a stronger agency of educational success than the school. The family is a stronger teacher of the religious imagination than the church. Political and social planning in a wise social order begins with the axiom <em>What strengthens the family strengthens society<\/em>\u2026.
