How to Celebrate the 2021 International Day of Families<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The observance of the 2021 International Day of Families during the continuing devastation of a worldwide pandemic calls to mind Ambassador Michael Novak\u2019s warning of a potentially more ominous threat: \u201cThroughout history, nations have been able to survive a multiplicity of disasters\u2014invasions, famines, earthquakes, epidemics, depressions\u2014but they have never been able to survive the disintegration of the family.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ambassador Novak further explained why the disintegration of the family would be so disastrous: because \u201cthe roles of a father and a mother, and of children with respect to them, is the absolutely critical center of social force.\u201d Or, as expressed in the Vatican\u2019s Charter of the Rights of the Family<\/em>, \u201cthe family is based on marriage, that intimate union of life in complementarity between a man and a woman,\u201d and, as \u201ca natural society, exists prior to the State or any other community, and possesses inherent rights which are inalienable.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This timeless truth about the family is as old as the human race, as attested in the opening chapter of Genesis: \u201cGod created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them. And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth.\u201d The divine blessing upon the marital union of man and woman extends beyond them, for such a family, says Pope Francis, creates the optimum environment \u201cfor the child\u2019s growth and emotional development\u201d and results in \u201ca unique, natural, fundamental and beautiful good for people, families, communities and societies.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

No wonder that historian Will Durant hailed Confucius as the world\u2019s greatest thinker for his insight that the world could not be put \u201cin proper order\u201d without first putting in order the family. No wonder that when the wise drafters of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights<\/em> sought to put the world in order following the most devastating war in history, they recognized the foundational and indispensable role of the family, the only group unit possessing human rights: \u201cThe family is the natural and fundamental group unit of society and is entitled to protection by society and the State.\u201d And no wonder that the family is likewise recognized as foundational in over a hundred national constitutions, some of which repeat the language of the Universal Declaration while others use descriptions for the family such as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  • \u201cthe basis of society\u201d (Bahrain)<\/li>
  • \u201cthe fundamental basis of society\u201d (El Salvador)<\/li>
  • \u201cthe fundamental element and the basis of all society\u201d (Cape Verde)<\/li>
  • \u201cthe nucleus of society\u201d (Qatar)<\/li>
  • \u201cthe fundamental nucleus of society\u201d (Chile, Bolivia, Nicaragua)<\/li>
  • \u201cthe basic nucleus of social organization\u201d (Angola)<\/li>
  • \u201cthe basic institution of society\u201d (Colombia)<\/li>
  • \u201cthe basic structure of society\u201d (Tunisia)<\/li>
  • \u201cthe primary unit of the society\u201d (Uzbekistan)<\/li>
  • \u201cthe primary and fundamental genesis of the spiritual and moral values of the society and the State\u201d (Guatemala)<\/li>
  • \u201cthe fundamental unit of society and the main centre for the growth and edification of [the] human being\u201d (Iran)<\/li>
  • \u201cthe natural and fundamental element of society\u201d (Seychelles)<\/li>
  • \u201cthe natural and fundamental constituent of society\u201d (Moldova)<\/li>
  • \u201cthe natural primary and fundamental unit group of Society, and a moral institution possessing inalienable and imprescriptible rights, antecedent and superior to all positive law\u201d (Ireland)<\/li>
  • \u201cthe fundamental pillar of the society\u201d (Afghanistan)<\/li>
  • \u201cthe cornerstone of the preservation and the advancement of the Nation\u201d (Greece)<\/li>
  • \u201cthe natural foundation of human society\u201d (Cameroon)<\/li>
  • \u201cthe natural and moral foundation of the human community\u201d (Niger)<\/li>
  • \u201cthe foundation of society,\u201d based on \u201cthe stable union of a man and a woman\u201d (Paraguay)<\/li>
  • \u201cthe foundation of the society,\u201d based on \u201cthe institution of marriage between a man and a woman\u201d (Dominican Republic)<\/li>
  • \u201cthe basis of the nation\u2019s survival,\u201d based on \u201cthe institution of marriage as the union of a man and a woman\u201d (Hungary)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n

    Nor is it any wonder that, as Ambassador Novak warned nearly fifty years ago, the disintegration of the family spells disaster. His warning has never been so timely, for such a disaster now stares us in the face. \u201cMarriage and the family are in crisis,\u201d declared Pope Francis. \u201cThis revolution in manners and morals has often flown the flag of freedom but in fact it has brought spiritual and material devastation to countless human beings.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Or, in the words of sociologist Gabriele Kuby, it is the \u201cdestruction of freedom in the name of freedom\u201d as \u201cgood is called evil, and evil is called good,\u201d all part of a \u201cglobal sexual revolution\u201d which \u201caffects everyone\u2014man and woman, young and old, our personal existence and the future of society\u201d and \u201creaches into every home and heart. There is no neutral territory to which we can escape\u201d as it \u201cincreases its speed and the fierceness of its attack on democratic freedoms from one day to the next.\u201d Employing \u201cthe art of deceptive speech,\u201d the revolution marches under the banner of \u201crights\u201d and claims to counter \u201cdiscrimination,\u201d while in reality launching a blitzkrieg of discrimination against the rights of society\u2019s natural and fundamental group unit, the family.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    It is the ultimate betrayal of the founding principles of the United Nations, which itself has fallen prey to \u201cinfluential individuals and NGOs that drive [the revolution\u2019s] global implementation,\u201d as Kuby explains: \u201cWithin a few decades, the UN became an institution that would use its power and resources to change the image of humanity as declared by the Universal Declaration of Human Rights<\/em> and to replace universal moral values with relativistic postmodern \u2018values\u2019 as the foundation of culture\u2026. Today the UN and its powerful sub-organizations fight for dissolution of men\u2019s and women\u2019s sexual identity [and] elimination of marriage and family.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Regardless of how enticing or beguiling the label\u2014such as \u201csexual and reproductive health and rights,\u201d or \u201csexual orientation and gender identity,\u201d or \u201ccomprehensive sexuality education\u201d\u2014any policy or program that undermines the family and its supporting values must be exposed and resisted. As nations now scramble to vaccinate against a dangerous and often deadly virus, we call upon all to protect against a potentially more dangerous enemy that seeks to destroy the very foundation of society. Honoring the treaty obligation in the International Covenant on Economic, Social, and Cultural Rights<\/em> to provide the family with \u201cthe widest possible protection and assistance\u201d may well be the most important thing a nation can do for itself and the rest of humanity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    At this critical time of unprecedented danger, we recommend the words of two religious leaders: \u201cOn all sides, the family is under attack. Many wonder if the institution is no longer needed. Our response is certain. If there is any hope for the future of nations, that hope resides in the family\u201d (President Russell M. Nelson). \u201cEvery threat to the family is a threat to society itself\u2026. The future of humanity passes through the family. So protect your families! See in them your country\u2019s greatest treasure and nourish them always\u201d (Pope Francis).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
