In 1991, I personally met Dr. Bernard Nathanson and his wife in the Mexican city of Puebla when he was awarded the recognition of Doctor Honoris Causa by the UPAEP University. I had the opportunity to greet him. His story impressed me: Bernard Nathanson, an American doctor, had performed thousands of abortions and was one of the most fervent supporters of the abortion industry, even participating in the founding of NARAL – the National Association for the Repeal of Abortion Laws – in the United States. But one day he realized that what he was doing was not right.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He recounted it all in the documentary, The Silent Scream<\/em>.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you are delicate, please note that the description below is very graphic. On one occasion, when I was telling it at a girls\u2019 high school in the city of Santiago, Chile, I realized that I had to \u201csoften\u201d the reality of how an abortion procedure is performed, because it was perhaps too much.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let\u2019s go back to Dr. Nathanson. I imagine him performing an abortion. The sedated mother is in a cold surgical room. He has introduced the saline solution into the woman\u2019s vagina so that the fetus would go into cardiac arrest. This is what happens at a stage where the fetus has not yet developed the natural defense mechanism of \u201cshock\u201d making it go unconscious in the face of unbearable pain. From an early stage, the nervous system has already developed and the fetus can \u201cfeel\u201d everything (it can express itself, smile, make faces, as well as feel pain). In a more advanced stage, the fetus develops the defense mechanism in the \u201cshock\u201d mode, in order to survive an episode of intense pain, falling unconscious and overriding the senses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But it is in that intermediate stage (when it is sensitive, but does not have the defense mechanism yet, so the cruelty is felt to the maximum) that the fetus begins to burn with the saline until its organs collapse… and without anesthesia, it is a real mutilation. If the animals are humanely given a small anesthetic to stun them before the slaughter… Why don\u2019t we give the unborn children a medical painkiller so that, while their flesh is being burnt, their senses are at least numbed during the final spasms and convulsions?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When the fetal heartbeat has stopped, the instruments are introduced to cut the fetus into pieces (it does not fit through the birth canal and must therefore be extracted in pieces). The first thing to do is to crush the largest part: the head. To do this, intrauterine cranial compression is performed, which involves crushing the fetus\u2019 head before evacuation so that it can be pulled out through the birth canal. The encephalic mass and the bones, in a lumpy, mashed texture, are suctioned using the cannula introduced into the womb. Next, the trunk, limbs, etc. are all cut up and quartered. Using the cannula, the suction and the forceps, body parts are removed and placed on an operating tray at the patient\u2019s side. The extracted limbs are arranged in order: the trunk in the center, above it the mass of the head, and on the sides the arms, legs, and loose pieces that form the puzzle of human morphology to ensure that all the pieces have been removed and no residues of the baby are left in the womb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is when the fetus is at a less advanced gestational age, because from the 6th<\/sup> month onwards, the abortionist has to induce labor using oxytocin, and when the baby\u2019s head comes out, the doctor crushes it with a large forceps and pulls the body out to extract it completely. If the baby survives, it is left on the tray until its heart stops beating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One day it happened that the saline did not work as expected and when the head came out, it was in agony with spasms before Dr. Nathanson\u2019s terrified gaze. That\u2019s when everything changed. He \u201clooked into the eyes\u201d of the living being for the first time. This gross injustice is based on the dehumanization of the victim. Therefore, in order to dehumanize the abortion, the mother is never allowed to see the ultrasound screen or to hear the intense pulsations of the beating heart. A heartbeat could make the mother wonder… that the heartbeat she hears is not her own, even if she assumes that all of the baby cells are part of her body. Of course, the reality is concealed from her… because looking into the eyes of a human being… can humanize even the toughest criminal… Well, almost everyone, which is why you should never look a baby in the eye when you’re having an abortion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr. Nathanson would become a pro-life activist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
