\u201cPowerful Families, Powerful Society\u201d is Turkey\u2019s motto, says<\/a> its Director of Communications Fahrettin Altun. It is what you would expect in a nation whose president has spoken openly of the \u201choliness\u201d of the family and whose constitution<\/a> declares, \u201cFamily is the foundation of the Turkish society,\u201d and \u201cthe State shall take the necessary measures and establish the necessary organization to protect peace and welfare of the family, especially mother and children.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of those measures was taken on March 20, 2021, when Turkey withdrew from the Istanbul Convention<\/a>, a 2011 European treaty to which it was the first signatory and which was subsequently ratified by 35 nations. In an official statement, Turkey explained<\/a> that while the treaty was \u201coriginally intended to promote women\u2019s rights,\u201d it was \u201chijacked by a group of people attempting to normalize homosexuality\u2014which is incompatible with Turkey\u2019s social and family values. Hence the decision to withdraw.\u201d  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

What Turkey did not<\/em> withdraw from, continued the statement, is its commitment to end violence against women. \u201cThe decision to withdraw from the Istanbul Convention by no means denotes that Turkey \u2018compromises the protection of women.\u2019 The Turkish State has continously stressed that the country will not give up on its fight against domestic violence by quitting the Convention…. Turkey will continue protecting the safety and the rights of all women,\u201d and \u201cfighting domestic violence with the principle of zero tolerance will remain on top of the government\u2019s agenda.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Turkey is hardly alone, the statement added, in its \u201cserious concerns about the Istanbul Convention. Six members of the European Union (Bulgaria, Hungary, Czechia, Latvia, Lithuania and Slovakia) did not ratify the Istanbul Convention. Poland has taken steps to withdraw from the Convention, citing an attempt by the LGBT community to impose their ideas about gender on the entire society.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Istanbul Convention is yet another example of an international human rights instrument ostensibly designed for the protection of women but infused with ideology that undermines the family and women\u2019s indispensable role therein. Speaking<\/a> to the Federalist Society nearly two decades ago, Professor Richard Wilkins referred to a \u201ccurious new development\u201d when he observed, \u201cIn order to improve the social and political standing of women\u2014a goal that is quite laudable\u2014international law has become unusually hostile to long-standing notions of marriage, the natural family and the rearing of children.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite important protections offered to women, the Istanbul Convention goes off the rails in defining \u201cgender\u201d as \u201cthe socially constructed roles, behaviours, activities and attributes that a given society considers appropriate for women and men\u201d (article 3), and in calling for the \u201ceradicating [of] prejudices, customs, traditions and all other practices\u2026 based on\u2026 stereotyped roles for women and men\u201d (article 12). Such provisions spurn the timeless truth that the family is society\u2019s \u201cnatural<\/em> and fundamental group unit\u201d (UDHR<\/a>) grounded in what Pope Francis refers to as \u201ccomplementarity between man and woman\u201d and resulting in \u201ca unique, natural, fundamental and beautiful good for people, families, communities and societies.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But Turkey\u2019s withdrawal \u201csparked both domestic and international outrage,\u201d reports one news source. The firestorm included angry protests in Istanbul and Ankara, as well as sharp criticism from abroad. The Council of Europe\u2019s Secretary General called it \u201cdeplorable,\u201d \u201ca huge setback,\u201d and \u201cdevastating news,\u201d while the EU\u2019s foreign policy chief declared that \u201cwe cannot but regret [it] deeply and express incomprehension.\u201d Germany\u2019s Foreign Ministry insisted it \u201csent the wrong signal to Europe and to the women of Turkey.\u201d And President Joe Biden termed it \u201cunwarranted,\u201d \u201cdeeply disappointing,\u201d and a \u201cdisheartening step backward\u201d\u2014words fraught with irony in describing what is in reality Turkey\u2019s encouraging step forward<\/em> to protect the foundation of its society. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Responding to the spate of reproofs and rebukes, Turkish Justice Minister Abdulhamit Gul tweeted, \u201cWe continue to protect our people\u2019s honor, the family and our social fabric with determination.\u201d At least one nation on earth is honoring its treaty obligation undertaken in the International Covenant on Economic, Social, and Cultural Rights<\/a>, which calls for \u201cthe widest possible protection and assistance\u201d to \u201cbe accorded to the family.\u201d <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
