Throughout history, the use of language has been developed to\nfacilitate human communication through the use of words in a structured and\nconventional way. Language is what allows us to communicate simple and complex\nconcepts, appreciate each other\u2019s thoughts and opinions, express reality and\nimagination and otherwise paint a picture of the world around us, and the world\nwe might envision in the future. As many have noted, words have meaning, and\nbeing able to depend on the common meaning of words we use is central to our ability\nto communicate with each other. When words lose their meaning our communication\nnaturally becomes less meaningful, and society suffers as a result.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Likewise, language allows us to apply logic \u2013 the process of\nreasoning conducted according to strict principles of validity. By applying\nlogic to situations, we can assess the likelihood of those situations\nreflecting truth. But in recent years, we have experienced a cultural\ncorruption of both language and logic, a corruption that pushes us onto a path\nrequiring the willing suspension of disbelief to navigate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Let\u2019s look at an example.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Throughout the history of the world, the word \u201cgender\u201d has\nmeant a person\u2019s sex, male or female. It is the lived experience of the human\ncondition that gender is a binary matter. A person is male or female. Those are\nthe only options in the natural world. But in today\u2019s popular culture, activists\nare working overtime to redefine the word \u201cgender.\u201d They insist that gender is\nnot based on biology \u2013 contrary to the lived experience of humankind throughout\nhistory \u2013 but instead is based on \u201cidentity.\u201d If a person \u201cidentifies\u201d as a\nparticular sex, then that is their gender regardless of their bodily reality.\nThus, activists insist we don\u2019t have two genders, but dozens of them, because identity\ncannot be constrained. This is why Facebook currently recognizes over 71 \u201cgenders.\u201d\nA few years ago, they only recognized 58 genders so apparently gender is multiplying.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Thus, we have genders such as \u201ctrans male\u201d and \u201ctrans female,\u201d\nto pick just two on the list. This is an affront to both language and logic.\nYou see, a \u201ctrans male\u201d is a woman and a \u201ctrans female\u201d is a male. From a logic\nperspective, all men have penises while no women have penises. Thus, a person\nwith a penis is logically a male. But this bit of logic and this use of\nlanguage is unacceptable in today\u2019s popular culture, say the activists. Worse,\nit is bigoted, hateful, hurtful and discriminatory. Those who adopt these\nattitudes must be punished and shamed until they apologize, repent and pay penance.\nThis is the Cancel Culture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This corruption of the meaning of gender is intentional. It\nis part of an intense effort by radical secularists to strip society of\ngendered roles that they deem to be \u201cpatriarchal.\u201d It is also part of stripping\nGod from modern society. Scripture tells us that God created people male and\nfemale, but today\u2019s gender ideology asserts that people are effectively their\nown god since they can create themselves according to their own desires.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Once the concept of gender is redefined, then naturally\nother understandings are swept away as well. Increasingly, the concept of \u201cwoman\u201d\nis being erased. Major institutions such as the American Cancer Society have\ntaken to referring to women as \u201cindividuals with a cervix.\u201d In a 2019 debate, a\nleading Democrat presidential candidate demanded that abortion be guaranteed as\na right for \u201ctrans females.\u201d This, said former Housing Secretary Julian Castro,\nwas essential to establish \u201creproductive justice.\u201d Moreover, he pledged a\nhealth care plan that would pay for abortion on demand for trans females.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The trouble with this in the real world, of course, is that \u201ctrans\nfemales\u201d are biological men who, despite the pleas of popular culture, are\nsimply incapable of becoming pregnant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Let\u2019s move on. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Activists like to talk a lot about science. They embrace science as being about objective truth that cannot be challenged by political opinion, especially conservative political opinion. Thus, the issue of climate change has become a leading issue for progressives. Every Democrat running for president this cycle, including nominee Joe Biden, tells us that climate change is an \u201cexistential threat.\u201d That literally means that unless we elect Democrats like Biden who are pledged to fight climate change, humanity will soon cease to exist. Leading Democrats such as Alexandria Ocasio Cortez and Bernie Sanders claim that we have little more than a decade left before humanity is extinguished. This notion is used to justify the most radical, extreme agenda ever envisioned \u2013 the so-called \u201cGreen New Deal\u201d that would remake society, savage our economy and fundamentally transform our way of life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Seriously? Science demonstrates that humanity will be\nextinguished 11 years from now unless we elect Democrats to save the planet?\nCount me among he skeptical. The climate has been changing for billions of years.\nFor at least the last 200,000 years homo sapiens (humans) have not only survived,\nbut thrived despite constant climate change. Now, we\u2019re supposed to accept that\nin just over a decade we will all be gone. These are some of the same\nscientific experts who cannot tell us with any confidence which way a\ndeveloping hurricane off the coast of Florida will travel as it unfolds in real\ntime right in front of their eyes, but they know with certainty what climate\nchange will do to the planet, and humanity, years from now. Preposterous.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In today\u2019s modern culture where language and logic are\ncorrupted, the mere expression of ideas and opinions are considered harmful if\nsaid ideas or opinions conflict with progressive ideology. Young people are\nsaid to be \u201ctriggered\u201d by the expression of various concepts advanced by\nconservatives, especially on college and university campuses. They are said to\nbe victims of \u201cmicroaggressions.\u201d Any expression that triggers another individual\nis considered hateful. Thus, it is improper to suggest that America\u2019s borders be\nsecured from illegal immigration, that marriage is the union of a man and a\nwoman, that life in the womb is entitled to protection, that gender is determined\nby biology and not feelings, etc. Students are entitled to \u201csafe spaces\u201d where\nthey can escape being triggered and campuses must be cleansed of conservatives\nwho express these offensive viewpoints.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
All of these changes demanded by popular culture are more\nthan just a concern for our mutual discourse. They bring with them the threat\nof action, including potential legal action. People have lost their jobs, lost\ntheir businesses, been banned from communicating on social media, been hauled\nbefore tribunals and courts, fined and even jailed simply for advancing ideas\nthat run contrary to the popular orthodoxy. If Democrats regain power in Washington,\nsoon laws like the misnamed \u201cEquality Act\u201d will make the exercise of opinion to\nbe illegal discrimination under federal law.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Naturally, conservatives have long objected to the\ncorruption of language and logic and to the resulting Cancel Culture. But recently,\nsome prominent liberals have added their own voices of condemnation. The\ncomedian Bill Maher recoils at the Cancel Culture and the embrace by Democrats\nof politically correct culture. He says, \u201cThe most important thing that the Democrats can do to win the\nnext election is to broom this element out of their party and stand up to the\nTwitter mob and the ultrawoke.\u201d Similarly, liberal feminist author J.K.\nRowling, who has been targeted by the \u201cultrawoke\u201d as a \u2018TERF\u2019 \u2013 a \u201ctrans-exclusionary\nradical feminist\u201d has strongly pushed back against the activists. Reacting to a\nnews headline that used the phrase, \u201cpeople who menstruate,\u201d Rowling caustically\ncommented on Twitter: \u201c\u2019People who menstruate.\u2019 I\u2019m sure there used to be a\nword for those people. Someone help me out. Wumben? Wimpund? Woomud?\u201d When her\ncomments provoked an immediate hostile backlash from the woke Twitter mob,\nRowling doubled down. \u201cIf sex isn\u2019t real, the lived reality of women globally\nis erased\u2026[E]rasing the concept of sex removes the ability of many to\nmeaningfully discuss their lives. It isn\u2019t hate to speak the truth.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It is\ngratifying to see liberals like Maher and Rowling take on the Cancel Culture\nand the woke mob. Society needs much more of this to counter the impact of\nactivists who have so successfully captured the culture and corrupted both\nlanguage and logic. Far too many people of good will \u2013 conservatives and common-sense\nliberals alike \u2013 have decided to just keep their head down to avoid any confrontations\nor repercussions. This cultural surrender has allowed the woke activists to\ncapture much turf. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Too much is at stake for our future to keep our heads down. We must stand up, speak out and challenge the mob in their corruption of language, in their defiance of logic and in their insistence on our surrender. Otherwise, well before climate change will supposedly \u201cextinguish\u201d the human race, not only are we likely to lose all the issues we care so much about, we will effectively lose even our right to raise and debate those issues.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
