Feminist writer Jessica Valenti recently told Vox that abortion should be treated as an \u201caffordability issue,\u201d arguing that few decisions have a greater effect on a person\u2019s finances than whether to have a child. She also claimed abortion restrictions can expose women to significant medical costs when pregnancy complications arise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer made a similar argument during a recent speech at the Human Rights Campaign\u2019s National Dinner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cIf you don\u2019t think abortion is about the economy, then you probably don\u2019t have a uterus,\u201d Whitmer said, arguing that decisions about when to start a family have major economic consequences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The messaging represents an effort to place abortion alongside inflation, healthcare, housing, and other kitchen-table concerns heading into November.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But reducing abortion to an affordability question leaves out the central issue: abortion intentionally ends the life of an unborn child. Financial hardship is real, and raising children can impose significant costs on families, but eliminating an unborn human life cannot be treated as an economic solution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Women facing difficult pregnancies deserve meaningful support\u2014better maternal healthcare, stronger families, financial assistance, and policies that make raising children easier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A society concerned about affordability should work to make motherhood more manageable, not present abortion as the answer when a child becomes financially difficult. Both mother and child deserve protection and support, regardless of their economic circumstances.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
