A British university has issued a warning to an emeritus professor after he publicly criticized assisted suicide, raising concerns about academic freedom as Parliament prepares for another debate over legalizing the practice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Dr. Kevin Yuill, an emeritus history professor at the University of Sunderland and chief executive of Humanists Against Assisted Suicide and Euthanasia, said he received the warning in June after someone complained about his advocacy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to emails obtained by The Telegraph, university officials told Yuill to \u201creflect carefully\u201d on his use of the emeritus title, saying it carried expectations regarding responsible public discourse and the institution\u2019s reputation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The complaint reportedly accused Yuill of lacking empathy and objected to his description of assisted-suicide campaigners as \u201cOrwellian.\u201d Yuill said he initially was not even told precisely what comments had prompted the complaint.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He described the university\u2019s response as a \u201cveiled threat\u201d and an attack on free speech.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Yuill\u2019s lawyers are now seeking an apology and a public statement from Sunderland affirming its commitment to freedom of expression. The Committee for Academic Freedom is also supporting him, warning that academics should not fear professional consequences simply for expressing lawful but controversial views.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The dispute comes as assisted suicide returns to Britain\u2019s political agenda. Labour MP Lauren Edwards has introduced another \u201cTerminally Ill Adults\u201d bill after an earlier attempt failed to become law.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
