In commemoration of the 75th<\/sup> anniversary of the founding of the United Nations, IOF has provided the following statement to ambassadors and their missions in New York.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

UN@75: A Time to Reaffirm Life and\nFamily<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

When this year\u2019s General Assembly is\nthe stuff of history, it will not be its celebration of the UN\u2019s 75th<\/sup>\nanniversary that most stands out but rather the fact that for the first time\never, the General Assembly was conducted as a virtual event. As the global\npandemic continues to take lives and ravage economies, humanity has turned\nhomeward for solace and safety in a poignant reminder of the preciousness of\nlife and family\u2014foundational pillars affirmed by powerful voices heard in the\nUnited Nations since its beginning. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Voices for Life<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Anchored in the unalienable Creator-endowed\nright to life is the 1945 UN Charter<\/a>\u2019s aspiration to \u201creaffirm faith in\nfundamental human rights, in the dignity and worth of the human person\u201d (preamble),\na goal advanced when the 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights<\/a> acknowledged \u201cthe inherent dignity\u201d\nand \u201cequal and inalienable rights of all members of the human family\u201d (preamble)\nand insisted, \u201cEveryone has the right to life, liberty and security of person\u201d\n(article 3). The UN left no doubt about the scope of this right when in its 1959\nDeclaration of the Rights of the\nChild<\/a> it recognized\nthat \u201cthe child, by reason of his physical and mental immaturity, needs special\nsafeguards and care, including appropriate legal protection, before as well as\nafter birth\u201d (preamble). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of\nthe most impassioned pleas for the unborn came in 1985 when a diminutive nun\nnamed Mother Teresa warned<\/a> the\nGeneral Assembly that \u201cabortion\nhas become the greatest destroyer of peace\u2026. [I]f we really want peace,\u2026 we\nwill not allow a single child to feel unwanted, to feel unloved.\u201d She urged that\nthe \u201cterrible law of killing the innocents, of destroying life, destroying the\npresence of God, be removed from our country, from our nation, from our people,\nfrom our families.\u201d Not long thereafter, the 1989 Convention on the Rights of the Child<\/a>, quoting the Declaration on the\nRights of the Child, reiterated in its preamble the child\u2019s need for special care\nand legal protection both before and after birth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 1994,\nthe International\nConference on Population and Development<\/a> announced, \u201cIn\nno case should abortion be promoted as a method of family planning\u201d (paragraph\n8.25), an instruction repeated by the 1995 Fourth\nWorld Conference on Women<\/a> (paragraph 106-k). Nearly a quarter of a\ncentury later, US president Donald Trump told<\/a> the 2019\nGeneral Assembly that\n\u201cevery child\u2014born and unborn\u2014is a sacred gift from God,\u201d and that Americans\nwill \u201cnever tire of defending innocent life\u2026 Global bureaucrats have absolutely\nno business attacking the sovereignty of nations that wish to protect innocent\nlife.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Voices for the Family<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Voices in the UN proclaiming the\npriority of family have been equally clear, as when article 16 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights<\/a>, in the only acknowledgment of\nanything beyond individual rights, recognized that the family is \u201centitled to\nprotection by society and the State\u201d because it is \u201cthe natural and fundamental\ngroup unit of society.\u201d Iterations of this description resound in over a\nhundred national constitutions and various UN outcome documents, while the\ndescription is repeated verbatim by the 2006 Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities<\/a> (preamble) and by two 1966 treaties,\nthe International Covenant on Civil and\nPolitical Rights<\/a>\n(article 23.1) and the International Covenant on Economic,\nSocial and Cultural Rights<\/a>, with the latter emphasizing the level of protection to which this\nnatural and fundamental group unit is entitled: \u201cThe widest possible protection\nand assistance should be accorded to the family\u201d (article 10.1). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was at the 2004 celebration of the\n10th<\/sup> anniversary of the International Year of the Family that the\nGeneral Assembly was told<\/a> by Secretary-General Kofi Annan, \u201cConcern\nfor the well-being of families dates back to the earliest days of the United\nNations\u2026. This anniversary is an opportunity to reaffirm the importance and\ncentrality of the family\u2026. Governments need to do more to help families adapt\nand thrive\u2026. We must not forget that the family is a vital partner in efforts\nto achieve the Millennium Development Goals and the many other objectives set\nby the international community during the last decade.\u201d The family\u2019s indispensable role in\ndevelopment was further emphasized by His Excellency Iftekhar Chowdhury of\nBangladesh, who observed, \u201cThe attainment of every Millennium Declaration Goal\nmust begin with the family. The family is the main instrument of societal\ntransformation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaking\nat that same 2004 event, US\nrepresentative Wade Horn explained why the family is fundamental: \u201cThroughout\nthe ages, political philosophers, social historians, and civic and religious\nleaders have praised the family as the foundation of the social order, the\nbedrock of nations, and the bastion of civilization…. The fact is that family\nis a universal and irreplaceable community, rooted in human nature and the\nbasis for all societies at all times. As the cradle of life and love for each\nnew generation, the family is the primary source of personal identity,\nself-esteem, and support for children. It is also the first and foremost school\nof life, uniquely suited to teach children integrity, character, morals,\nresponsibility, service, and wisdom…. The state\u2019s foremost obligation… is\nto respect, defend, and protect the family as an institution.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The vital role of the family was further\nemphasized by the coalition of nations known as the Group of Friends of the\nFamily, which in 2015 told the UN, \u201cWe are convinced that the sustainability of\ncommunities and societies largely rests on the strength of the family as a\nbasic unit of society and the natural environment for the growth and well-being\nof all its members, particularly children. We recognize the vital role of the\nfamily in attaining the internationally agreed development goals and confirm\nour commitment to enhance the contribution of the families in the efforts to\nachieve sustainable development goals by promoting family-oriented policies.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Time to Reaffirm Family and Life<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

We urge that the foundational\nprinciples articulated by these powerful voices stand as a bulwark against all contrary\npolicies\u2014of which there continue to be far too many\u2014advocated in the United\nNations. The virtual gathering of UN Member States on 21 September 2020 in\ncommemoration of the 75th<\/sup> anniversary is scheduled to proceed under the\nofficially designated theme, \u201cThe Future We Want, the UN We Need: Reaffirming\nour Collective Commitment to Multilateralism.\u201d We recommend that the theme be\nexpanded to include, \u201cThe Future We Want, the World We Need: Reaffirming our\nCollective Commitment to Life and Family\u201d\u2014a commitment that will enable\nunprecedented progress for every other worthwhile objective of the United\nNations.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n
