Smith and Binary now face significant penalties\u2014up to $100,000 each in damages. One of the rulings cited Smith\u2019s social media comment identifying Riley Dennis as the top goal scorer in a women\u2019s competition as “vilification”. Another focused on her referring to Stephanie Blanch as a \u201cbloke in a frock\u201d in a newsletter. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Lyle Shelton, National Director of Family First, called the rulings unjust, warning that anti-vilification laws have become tools to silence opposing views. \u201cNo one should be able to sue their fellow Australian on the basis of hurt feelings,\u201d he asserted. \u201cFree speech must only be limited where speech incites violence\u2014not to uphold identity politics.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
