Introduced under the cover of a late Friday evening, the bill\u2014named for a trans-identifying man killed in a 2022 nightclub shooting\u2014labels parents who don\u2019t affirm their child\u2019s self-proclaimed gender identity as perpetrators of \u201ccoercive control.\u201d According to the legislation, courts must view a parent\u2019s use of a child\u2019s birth name or biological pronouns as equivalent to threats of violence or forced criminality in custody battles. It\u2019s a blatant attempt to criminalize common sense and punish those who dare to stand by truth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThis isn\u2019t about protection\u2014it\u2019s about control,\u201d said State Rep. Jarvis Caldwell, a Republican who sounded the alarm on social media. Democrats dropped this bombshell with less than 24 hours\u2019 notice, a sneaky tactic to blindside lawmakers who\u2019d typically have weeks to prepare. \u201cThis bill attacks the very foundation of family,\u201d he warned. \u201cIt\u2019s designed to strip parents of their God-given authority to guide their children through confusion and dysphoria, all while trampling the First Amendment.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The bill doesn\u2019t stop at parents. It also shields Colorado from cooperating with states that protect children by removing them from parents who push dangerous transgender medical interventions\u2014puberty blockers, cross-sex hormones, and irreversible surgeries. It even mandates that schools ditch gender-based dress codes and embrace any \u201cchosen name\u201d a student dreams up, no questions asked. If this becomes law, \u201cdeadnaming\u201d and \u201cmisgendering\u201d will be enshrined as \u201cdiscriminatory acts,\u201d opening the door to punish not just parents but anyone who refuses to play along with the left\u2019s gender games.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Erin Lee, a Colorado mom and head of Protect Kids Colorado, shared her gut-wrenching story. Her sixth-grade daughter was secretly \u201ctransitioned\u201d at school, manipulated into believing her normal growing pains meant she was a boy. Affirming her only deepened her anguish. \u201cIf this law existed four years ago, I\u2019d have lost my daughter for refusing to lie to her.\u201d \u201cThe state\u2019s pushing a myth that you must transition your child or they\u2019ll die. Now they\u2019re saying: transition them, or we\u2019ll take them away. This is tyranny, pure and simple.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Lee said that the bill strengthens Colorado\u2019s role as a haven for \u201cwrong-sex mutilation,\u201d luring families to the state to medicalize their kids against a parent\u2019s will. She accused Democrats of rushing the bill through \u201cin the night\u201d to dodge scrutiny, though even with just a day\u2019s notice, more opponents than supporters showed up to fight it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Colorado parents are already living this nightmare.
