True to its commitment to protect and empower women\nwithout undermining their rights as mothers\nor their indispensable role for the family, the Trump Administration last week\nissued via USAID\u2014the world\u2019s premier international development agency\u2014a draft<\/a>\nof its 2020 Gender\nEquality and Women\u2019s Empowerment Policy. In stark contrast to the 2012\nObama policy<\/a>\nit supersedes, the Trump policy refuses to pander to the so-called sexual\nrights agenda driven by the EU and powerful NGOs.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

To appreciate the approach of the\nTrump policy, it is helpful to compare the statement<\/a>\nsent to UN ambassadors in February by IOF and co-signing organizations around\nthe world, in which we called attention to the commitment of the Universal Declaration\nof Human Rights to \u201cthe inherent dignity\u201d and \u201cequal and inalienable rights of\nall members of the human family,\u201d including \u201cthe equal rights of men and women\u201d\nto live free from slavery, torture, and degrading treatment, the right to own\nproperty, the right to receive equal pay for equal work, and the right to be\neducated. But, we insisted, the urgent work of protecting the rights of women\nmust not undermine the most important of their equal and inalienable rights and\ntheir God-given uniqueness in the marital union that forms the basis of what\nthe Declaration recognizes as society\u2019s \u201cnatural and fundamental group unit,\u201d\nnamely, the family.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Similarly, the Trump Administration\nbegins its proposed policy by announcing, \u201cOur vision is of a prosperous and\npeaceful world in which women, girls, men, and boys enjoy equal economic,\nsocial, cultural, civil, and political rights and are equally empowered to\nsecure better lives for themselves, their families, their communities, and\ntheir countries. At USAID, we are committed to empowering women and girls\nacross the globe to\u2026 reach their full potential\u2026\u201d Implicit in this policy is the\ntimeless wisdom expressed by Michael Novak when he stated, \u201cWhat strengthens\nthe family strengthens society,\u201d and by Pope Francis when he spoke of \u201cthe\ncomplementarity between man and woman\u201d which \u201clies at the foundation of marriage\nand the family,\u201d providing \u201ca unique, natural, fundamental and beautiful good\nfor people, families, communities and societies.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

No wonder the Trump policy is drawing fire from the likes of the (misnamed) Center for Values in International Development, where a transgender woman first grudgingly concedes that \u201cAs far as it goes, the USAID draft 2020 Gender Equality and Women\u2019s Empowerment Policy is a fine document,\u201d and then denounces it as \u201can inadequate response\u201d and \u201can ideologically motivated step backwards\u201d because it \u201cconjures up a reality in which the gender binary is unquestioned\u201d and \u201cwhere people like me (a transgender woman) either don\u2019t exist or aren\u2019t worth a mention.\u201d But no amount of criticism or pressure has been able to deter the Trump Administration from what we have shown again<\/a> and again<\/a> to be an unremitting defense of life, liberty, and family\u2014a reality that should be of vital interest to every voter in the upcoming presidential election.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
