Speaking on July 16, 2020, in\nPhiladelphia near where the Declaration of Independence was issued over two centuries\nearlier, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo unequivocally reaffirmed the\nunalienable rights mentioned therein as he called for a return to America\u2019s\nfounding principles and introduced the Draft\nReport<\/a> of the Commission on\nUnalienable Rights<\/a>. \u201cAmerica\u2019s founders didn\u2019t invent the \u2018unalienable\nrights,\u2019\u201d he explained<\/a>,\n\u201cbut stated very clearly in the Declaration of Independence that they are held\nas \u2018self-evident\u2019 that human beings were \u2018created equal\u2019 and \u2018endowed by their\nCreator with certain unalienable rights\u2026 among [those] are Life, Liberty, and\nthe Pursuit of Happiness\u2019\u201d\u2014making that document \u201cthe most important statement\nof human rights ever written.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAmerica draws strength and\ngoodness from her founding ideals,\u201d he continued, and \u201cour foreign policy must\nbe grounded by those ideals as well. But we know this: We can\u2019t do good\u2014at home\nor abroad\u2014if we don\u2019t precisely know what we believe and why we believe it. And\nthat\u2019s why I asked Professor [Mary Ann] Glendon to form a commission composed\nof some of the most distinguished scholars and activists. I asked them not to\ndiscover new principles, but to furnish advice on human rights grounded in our\nnation\u2019s founding principles and the principles of the 1948 Universal\nDeclaration of Human Rights [UDHR]. Because without this grounding\u2026 our efforts\nto protect and promote human rights is unmoored and, therefore, destined to\nfail.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cUnmoored\u201d is a perfect description of the dangerous travesty masquerading in the name of rights even as it threatens the unalienable rights of individuals and of society\u2019s natural and fundamental group unit, the family. \u201cThe effort to shut down legitimate debate by recasting contestable policy preferences as fixed and unquestionable human rights imperatives promotes intolerance, impedes reconciliation, devalues core rights, and denies rights in the name of rights,\u201d says the Draft Report<\/a>. Or, in the words of sociologist Gabriele Kuby, it is \u201cthe destruction of freedom in the name of freedom\u201d by a \u201cglobal sexual revolution<\/a> [that] affects everyone.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This insidious threat to human rights reverberates in the halls of power throughout the world and the United Nations. \u201cThe prodigious expansion of human rights,\u201d says the Draft Report,  in \u201cmany different UN agencies, regional human rights systems,\u201d and \u201cdozens of treaties, hundreds of resolutions and declarations, and thousands of provisions codifying individual human rights\u2026 has weakened rather than strengthened the claims of human rights and left the most disadvantaged more vulnerable.\u201d The description calls to mind the lament of Pope Francis that the \u201crevolution in manners and morals has often flown the flag of freedom, but in fact it has brought spiritual and material devastation to countless human beings, especially the poorest and most vulnerable.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Little\nwonder that the Draft Report has drawn heavy fire from organizations such as\nthe Center for Reproductive Rights, which has complained<\/a>\nthat \u201cthe establishment, composition, and process of the Commission itself\u201d are\n\u201cimproper\u201d and its efforts \u201cmisguided,\u201d and has objected to \u201cthe false\nnarrative created by the Secretary of State, and perpetuated by Commission\nmembers.\u201d (Written comments that were submitted to the Commission are online<\/a>,\nand additional public comment can be submitted to commission@state.gov<\/a>\nthrough July 30.) <\/p>\n\n\n\n
