{"id":216260,"date":"2023-12-25T04:35:43","date_gmt":"2023-12-25T09:35:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ifamnews.com\/?p=216260"},"modified":"2023-12-25T04:35:47","modified_gmt":"2023-12-25T09:35:47","slug":"the-polar-star-of-human-existence","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ifamnews.com\/en\/the-polar-star-of-human-existence","title":{"rendered":"The polar star of human existence"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-learning-to-love\">Learning to love<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>I call the &#8220;polar star of human existence&#8221; what I consider to be the most accurate answer to the meaning of our life:  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>we have come into this world,  <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><em>not<\/em> <\/strong> directly to be happy,  <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>not even to love,  <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>but to<strong> <em>learn to love.<\/em> <\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>That is why, to the famous statement of St. John of the Cross regarding sunset and love, I like to add the implicit adverb: &#8220;at sunset you will be examined<strong> <em>only<\/em> <\/strong> in love&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Happiness, on the other hand, is<strong> <em>directly and exclusively<\/em> <\/strong>proportional to each person&#8217;s capacity to love, expressed in deeds:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>who loves <strong><em>much and well<\/em> <\/strong>is very happy;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>who <strong><em>more or less<\/em> <\/strong>loves, also enjoys a tenuous and fragile, intermittent happiness;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>and who <strong><em>does not<\/em> <\/strong> love, no matter how successful he may be in other areas of life, will never experience true joy.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>We have come to this world, exclusively, to learn to love (happiness is the consequence).<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-great-opportunity\">The great opportunity<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Life is, therefore, not so much the &#8220;test&#8221;, but rather <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong><em>the great opportunity<\/em> <\/strong> to learn to love,  <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>so that we may become happier and happier in this world  <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>and, in the end, having expanded the borders of our heart,  <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>we &#8220;fit&#8221; more of God in our souls and are happier for eternity.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Life is the great opportunity offered to us to learn to love.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-negatively\">Negatively<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The derivations of taking &#8220;the North Star&#8221; absolutely seriously (<strong><em>only! <\/em> <\/strong>to learn to love) are of two types.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Negatively<\/em><\/strong> implies that everything that <strong><em>we do not do,<\/em> <\/strong>we do not turn into love, no matter how technically perfect it may be, it remains useless or harmful.<strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Useless, because it adds <strong><em>nothing<\/em><\/strong> to the bottom line (it&#8217;s as if it didn&#8217;t contribute to the<strong> <em>no<\/em><\/strong> as if we had not done it).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Harmful, at least insofar as it has replaced another action performed out of love and, therefore, has prevented us from growing and approaching our fulfillment.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Everything that we do not transform into love is useless or harmful.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-positively\">Positively<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The positive consequences are much more interesting and profitable.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Everything we have to do in this life can be summed up in <strong><em>two converging lines,<\/em><\/strong> which often intersect:  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>   <em>To love more and better<\/em> <\/strong>those we have to love<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>   <em>Transform into love<\/em> <\/strong>everything we do (seeking the good of others, as it seems obvious, and here it crosses with the first way).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-more-and-better\">More and better<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>We have to love all people, each of them &#8220;beginning and end of love&#8221;.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But in an<strong><em> orderly<\/em><\/strong> manner.<strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The &#8220;order&#8221; is given by the proximity, not so much physical, but relational.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And since in the human being the bonds of freedom are superior to those of blood, for those of us who are married the first and most relevant &#8220;term&#8221; of our love is always \u2013 it must be! \u2013<strong> <em>our spouse.<\/em> <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Next, the rest of the family, friends, colleagues, neighbors&#8230; every human being.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>The first and primary term of our love is, for married people, our spouse.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-all-transformed-into-love\">All transformed into love?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The answer seems obvious: we should do everything that is <strong><em>legitimate <\/em><\/strong>(the non-legitimate should not be done).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But <strong><em>not<\/em>  <\/strong>all <strong><em>equally.<\/em> <\/strong><em> <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The rest, for example, can and must be transformed into love: we have the <strong><em>duty <\/em> <\/strong>to rest, whenever possible, <strong><em>because <\/em> <\/strong>the people we love need us rested: for them, therefore, out of love.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And the same goes for sports, food and drink, walks&#8230; everything legitimate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong><em>sexuality<\/em><\/strong> and <strong><em>work<\/em> <\/strong>are on another line: by their very nature, <strong><em>they are<\/em> <em>love,<\/em><\/strong> and when we do not perform them out of love, we denaturalize them, we prostitute them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Sexuality and work are two exceptions&#8230; &#8220;for excess&#8221;.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-sexuality\">Sexuality<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Sexuality <strong><em>is<\/em> <\/strong>a wonderful means to awaken, consolidate, develop, mature, make fruitful, and sometimes &#8220;repair&#8221; or &#8220;recover&#8221;&#8230; love&#8230; <strong><em>Love <\/em> <\/strong>between a man and a woman, considered as such.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Therefore:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Exercised in accordance with its nature, it constitutes an exceptional means of rewarding <strong><em>and an exceptionally rewarding<\/em> <em>way<\/em><\/strong> to grow as a person.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>When put into play <strong><em>on the margin of love<\/em>,<\/strong> sexuality is denaturalized, prostituted, and instead of perfecting a person, it provokes a tremendous counter-doing.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Precisely because of its enormous power, because of its immense capacity to perfect, by depriving it of its intrinsic relationship with love, sexuality destroys: the corruption of the optimum is lousy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Because it is an constituting part of love, when its nature is respected, sexuality enjoys a marvelous capacity to perfect and make us happy. Exercised outside of love, it destroys.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-about-our-job\">What about our job?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>It is also &#8220;very close&#8221; to love. It is, by its very nature, love: &#8220;the incognito of love,&#8221; as Grimaldi calls it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And rightly so.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Aristotle, to love is &#8220;to will the good for another&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And to want it as effectively as possible: to &#8220;build&#8221; these goods and give them to the beloved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But working is nothing more than making <strong><em>goods <\/em><\/strong>for others<strong> <\/strong>(and, by the same token, <strong><em>loving them<\/em><\/strong>).<strong><em> <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>No work is justified \u2013 nor <em>legitimized \u2013<\/em> by economic gains alone.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>First, it has to generate a <strong><em>real benefit<\/em><\/strong> for its recipients.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Otherwise, it does not deserve the name of work&#8230; nor should it be performed.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>No work is justified\/legitimized only by the profits it generates.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the contrary, if we <strong><em>work well,<\/em> <\/strong>by putting our heads and hearts into it,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>we &#8220;leave&#8221; <strong><em>the best of ourselves<\/em> <\/strong>in the product of our work:  <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><em>that<\/em> <\/strong> is what we offer to those who benefit from it (without them usually knowing from whom these goods come: the &#8220;incognito&#8221;);<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>we give <strong><em>ourselves <\/em><\/strong>in the product of our labor.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Hence, from its real identity with love, the <strong><em>tremendous perfecting power of work.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And, by the same token, carried out outside of love, denatured or prostituted, it destroys and frustrates.<strong> <\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The more work is done, the greater the technical perfection with which this work is performed:  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>it &#8220;should&#8221; have made me grow enormously,  <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>but, by putting ego in the middle, instead of aggrandizing me, it undoes me.  <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Again the corruption of the optimum.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Because of its intrinsic relationship with love, work has an enormous power to perfect.
