Together with <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/vonderleyen?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@vonderleyen<\/a> the forthcoming appointment shows our determination to ensure the rights of ALL faiths and beliefs are respected across the world.<\/p>&mdash; Margaritis Schinas (@MargSchinas) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MargSchinas\/status\/1280825709326458881?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">July 8, 2020<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The office of the Special Envoy was <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/commission\/presscorner\/detail\/en\/IP_16_1670\" target=\"_blank\">established on May 6, 2016<\/a>, fulfilling the call made by the European Parliament through its <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/europarl.europa.eu\/sides\/getDoc.do?pubRef=-\/\/EP\/\/TEXT+TA+P8-TA-2016-0051+0+DOC+XML+V0\/\/EN&amp;language=EN\" target=\"_blank\">Resolution of 4 February 2016<\/a> in response to the massacres of religious minorities in Iraq and Syria by the terrorist group called ISIS.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The post was filled by Jan Figel\u2019, a Slovak, who served formerly as a European Commissioner and as Minister of Transportation in his own country, and served brilliantly in this role until December 2019, when his mandate was over.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Immediately after that, NGOs and advocates for religious liberty in Europe wrote petitions to the President of the European Commission (EC), Ms. Ursula von der Leyen, requesting a that she bestowed a new mandate on Mr. Figel. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Among those petitions, <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/ifamnews.com\/en\/petition\/urge-the-reinstatement-of-jan-figel-to-crucial-religious-freedom-role\/\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;iFamNews&#8221; hosted our own<\/a>, collecting the signatures of thousands of readers strongly convinced of the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/ifamnews.com\/it\/una-petizione-a-ursula-von-der-leyen-per-jan-figel\/\" target=\"_blank\">preciousness of the fight for religious freedom in the world<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But on <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/1ztp833emcflef7tm24jjqbe-wpengine.netdna-ssl.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/International-Religious-Freedom-Roundtable-FORB-002-Copy.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">June 4 the EC answered, writing to the International Religious Freedom Roundtable in Brussels<\/a>, saying that not only Mr. Figel\u2019s mandate was not to be confirmed, but even that the very office of the Special Envoy was not going to continued, vaguely adding that the same mission of the Special Envoy was going to be pursued in different ways.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It seemed like saying that the EU &nbsp;doesn\u2019t care about religious freedom in the world, as <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/ifamnews.com\/it\/una-petizione-a-ursula-von-der-leyen-per-jan-figel\/\" target=\"_blank\">I wrote on June 19<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The game seemed then over. Suddenly, though, the case re-opened when three prominent German religious leaders appealed again to Ms. von der Leyen: the president of the Conference of European Rabbis, Mr Pinchas Goldschmid, the chairman of the Central Council of Muslims in Germany, Mr. Aiman Mazyek, and the highest-ranking Orthodox figure in Germany, Metropolitan Augustinos. &#8220;iFamNews&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/ifamnews.com\/it\/si-riapre-il-caso-di-jan-figel-per-la-liberta-religiosa\/\">featured a story<\/a> about this in our Italian edition just today, wondering if anything could come from this initiative and frankly doubting it. But here we are!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yes, it is a great victory, and we are part of it. You, our faithful readers of &#8220;iFamNews&#8221;, can be proud: you made it possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You and I know that the battle for religious freedom is fundamental. Religious freedom is a basic human right. It is also the first <em>political<\/em> right of a human being.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It fact, it doesn\u2019t cover only the freedom to personal belief, but it is also, inseparably, the right to live and behave <em>publicly <\/em>according to the faith. Thus, beyond being fundamental <em>per se<\/em>, religious liberty is key to securing other rights, like the right to defend innocent life from conception to natural death, to protect marriage and the natural family, to preserve families\u2019 liberty of education, to guarantee freedom of speech, and to allow enterprises that build on life and family.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If a person cannot be repressed for his or her belief, and if he or she enjoys the right to live according to his or her faith, no state or agency can obstruct other social and political freedoms deriving from his or her faith.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We cannot repeat this often enough: the fight for religious freedom critical. It is not an appeal to relativism, mere freedom of conscience and amorality.
