In America alone, according to the National Center for Fathering, \u201cmore\nthan 20 million children live in a home without the physical presence of a\nfather.&nbsp;Millions more have dads who are physically present, but\nemotionally absent.&nbsp;If it were classified as a disease, fatherlessness\nwould be an epidemic worthy of attention as a national emergency.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But the\ndecline of fatherhood \u201cisn\u2019t just a U.S. problem\u2014it\u2019s a human problem,\u201d explains\nChristopher Brown of the National Fatherhood Initiative, resulting in \u201cour most\nintractable social ills affecting children,\u201d who are thereby at \u201cincreased risk of living in poverty, performing\npoorly in school, emotional and behavioral problems, becoming violent, getting\npregnant (or getting someone pregnant) as a teen, winding up in prison or jail,\nand committing suicide.\u201d And as pointed out by Dr.\nDavid Popenoe, \u201cbecause children represent the future of our society, these\nnegative consequences are a social calamity in the making,\u201d such that \u201cdisappearing\ndads are destroying our future.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For\nchildren with absentee fathers, Father\u2019s Day can be a traumatic time of longing\nfor what might have been and of grief for the denial of what IOF founder Dr. Allan\nCarlson calls the right of every child to both a father and a mother. These are\nthe children who, through no fault of their own, miss the unique blessings that\nonly a father can bring. \u201cFathers are far more than just \u2018second adults\u2019 in the\nhome,\u201d according to Popenoe, for \u201cinvolved fathers bring positive benefits to\ntheir children that no other person is as likely to bring,\u201d making their\ncontribution \u201cunique and irreplaceable.\u201d It is what Dr. Bradford Wilcox refers\nto as \u201cthe distinct, positive impact of a good dad.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For those children fortunate enough\nto grow up with a faithful, loving father and mother joined in marriage and\ncommitted above self to the greater good of their family, Father\u2019s Day dawns as\na day of joy and gratitude. These are the children to whom President Ronald\nReagan alluded when he stated, \u201cFatherhood, after all, is about\nchildhood\u201d and \u201cis all about the things that matter most\u2014about love and new life,\nabout trust and responsibility, about faithfulness to a family and to a\ncalling.\u201d These are the children who, as emphasized by a key <a href=\"https:\/\/childwelfare.gov\/pubPDFs\/fatherhood.pdf\">publication<\/a> of the\nUS Department of Health and Human Services, \u201care more likely to have good physical and emotional health,\nto achieve academically, and to avoid drugs, violence, and delinquent behavior.\u201d\nAnd these are the fortunate children for whom, in the words of the 1959 UN <a href=\"https:\/\/cirp.org\/library\/ethics\/UN-declaration\/\">Declaration of the\nRights of the Child<\/a>, mankind is truly giving \u201cthe best it has to give.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On this Father\u2019s Day, we honor the men\naround the world who, as described by President Reagan, \u201chave taken on\nthe responsibilities and joys of fatherhood\u201d and given their families the \u201cgift\nof love as role models, providers, and defenders\u201d by \u201cfostering children\u2019s\nphysical and emotional growth, encouraging success, easing failure, maintaining\nfamily life, contributing vitally to the economy, and serving their\ncommunities.\u201d Meanwhile, for the benefit of children growing up without a father, we urge all who can to reach out and,\nas Ecclesiasticus says, \u201cbe as a father unto the fatherless\u201d by easing their\nburdens and lifting their spirits. We especially urge absentee fathers to\nreconnect with their children and become a nurturing and nourishing part of\ntheir lives, providing for them financially, emotionally, and spiritually. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And to a world beset with the\ndevastating effects of fatherlessness\u2014\u201cthe most\ndisturbing and consequential social trend of our time,\u201d according to Dr. Wade Horn\u2014we say with Dr. Timothy Rarick (writing in <a href=\"https:\/\/familycapital17sdgs.org\/\"><em>Family\nCapital and the SDGs<\/em><\/a>), \u201cLet us bring back fatherhood and heal the\nplague of poverty.\u201d To which we add, \u201cLet us bring back fatherhood and heal our\nbroken world\u2014and the broken hearts of our precious children.\u201d <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This year\u2019s celebration of Father\u2019s Day highlights the fact that as COVID-19 continues to ravage the world, another pandemic is plaguing mankind.
