IOF doesn\u2019t often find itself agreeing with author J.K. Rowling,\nthe creator of the hugely popular Harry Potter series, the multibillion-dollar\nfranchise based on witchcraft, wizardry and magic. Rowling, like most of those\nwho make their living in entertainment, considers herself to be a feminist and\na progressive who\u2019s in tune with today\u2019s liberal political elite. But the other\nday she tweeted something about which we agree \u2013 if transgender ideology is\naccepted as real, it will erase the reality of women. \u201cIf sex isn\u2019t real, the\nlived reality of women globally is erased\u2026[E]rasing the concept of sex removes\nthe ability of many to meaningfully discuss their lives. It isn\u2019t hate to speak\nthe truth.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The perverse ideology of transgenderism posits that sex is\nnot real. Sex, the ideology proclaims, is really about identity, not biology.\nIf a man identifies as a woman, he is a real<\/em><\/strong> woman and must be\naccepted as such by law and culture. Anyone who refuses to do so is\ntransphobic, bigoted and hateful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n When the inevitable howling from the left erupted, Rowling\nwas quick to add that she knows and loves \u201ctrans people\u201d and would march with\nthem if they were being discriminated against. But this does not change her\nunderlying belief as a feminist that declaring biological sex to not be real is\nto declare that women do not exist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Rowling is absolutely correct in this view. If sex is based\non identity and not biology, then women do not exist as a unique half of\nhumanity. Nor do men for that matter. Sex is thus obliterated and we are left\nwith subjective feelings to define reality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n If feelings and not biology rule the day, there is no reason\nto be focused on things like pay equity. There is no reason to maintain female\nsports as a separate competition from male sports. There is no reason to be\nconcerned about opening doors so women have access to male-dominated career\npaths. We wouldn\u2019t need shelters for battered and abused women, or rape crisis\ncenters either.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The LGBT crowd has given women like J.K. Rowling a name to\nshame and embarrass them \u2013 they are called a \u201cTERF\u201d \u2013 \u201ctransgender exclusionary\nradical feminist.\u201d Rowling has heard it before. She responded to the haters as\nfollows: \u2018Feminazi,\u2019 \u2018TERF,\u2019 \u2018*itch,\u2019 \u2018witch.\u2019 Times change. Women hate is\neternal.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n It would seem that Rowling is determined to engage the\nprogressive left in a discussion of the biological nature of sex \u2013 which she correctly\ndescribes as \u201cimmutable\u201d \u2013 since she didn\u2019t accidentally fall into this issue.\nIn fact, she raised the issue of sex and transgenderism in a series of tweets\nlate last year, and was roundly attacked by many of her fellow leftists back\nthen. It would thus seem that she purposely is poking the LGBT beast to keep\nthe issue front and center.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This would all be an interesting side show \u2013 a glimpse of\nthe left attacking its own \u2013 were it not for the real world, dangerous efforts\nto actually impose transgender ideology in law, in addition to culture. The\ngrossly-misnamed Human Rights Campaign, the leading extremist LGBT lobby group\nin America, intends to do just that. They are sponsoring the similarly\ngrossly-misnamed \u201cEquality Act\u201d to, among other things, impose transgender\nideology in law.<\/p>\n\n\n\n IOF is certainly used to the attacks from LGBT extremists for speaking the truth about gender and its basis in biology. Our view is that sex is indeed immutable. A person can no more change his or her sex than they can utter \u201cexpecto patronum\u201d and cast an awesome spell. A person\u2019s sex is a gift from God, something that uniquely contributes to the fullness and richness of human flourishing. Gender is not based on emotions or feelings. It is a biological reality.
