If you were\nto summarize in one brief statement what IOF is all about, it might be this: \u201cMankind owes to the child the best it has\nto give.\u201d The words are from the UN\u2019s 1959 Declaration\nof the Rights of the Child<\/a>, which leaves no doubt about what is best for\nchildren: \u201cwherever possible,\u201d every child should \u201cgrow up in the care and\nunder the responsibility of his [or her] parents\u201d in order to receive the \u201cspecial\nprotection\u201d and \u201cspecial safeguards and care\u201d to which all children are\nentitled, given with \u201clove and understanding\u201d so they can \u201cdevelop physically,\nmentally, morally, spiritually and socially in a healthy and normal manner and\nin conditions of freedom and dignity.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The foundation for this ideal environment has been described\nby IOF founder Dr. Allan Carlson in The Natural Family: A Manifesto<\/em> as \u201cthe conjugal bond built on fidelity,\nmutual duty, and respect,\u201d a bond that allows the husband and wife \u201cto emerge\ninto their full potential\u201d and \u201cbecome as their Creator intended, a being\ncomplete.\u201d From this \u201cnatural union flows new human life\u201d as the parents \u201cfind\ntheir love transformed into a living child\u201d and become \u201cthe child\u2019s first\nteachers\u201d and \u201cguides and guardians.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Or,\nin the words of Pope Francis, \u201ccomplementarity between man and woman\u2026 lies\nat the foundation of marriage and the family\u2026. Children have a right to grow up\nin a family with a father and a mother capable of creating a suitable\nenvironment for the child\u2019s growth and emotional development.\u201d Tragically,\nnotes Pope Francis, this foundational right is increasingly violated under a deceptive\nbanner of rights: \u201cToday, marriage and the family are in crisis. This\nrevolution in manners and morals has often flown the flag of freedom, but in\nfact it has brought spiritual and material devastation to countless human\nbeings.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a world increasingly hostile to children, IOF boldly declares<\/a> that \u201cchildren are our future,\u201d and that their \u201cnatural refuge\u201d and \u201cfirst and foremost school\u201d is \u201cthe family, a universal community based on the marital union of a man and a woman.\u201d Our work to encourage and empower faithful parents for the benefit of children is well known worldwide through our World Congress of Families, our international journal, and our work in the United Nations. Less visible is the profound personal commitment of each IOF team member to his or her own family and children, a reality I have been privileged to observe up close. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

As we celebrate the Global Day of Parents on June\n1, we honor all faithful parents who selflessly give the world their best by giving\ntheir best to their children, and we urge leaders and policymakers everywhere\nto promote and defend those measures designed to truly give children the best\nmankind that has to give. As we stated<\/a> at our World\nCongress of Families IX, \u201cWe call for a culture that honors and enables\nfaithful, fulfilling, and resilient marriages; that recognizes and protects the\nuniquely valuable contributions of both mothers and fathers to the lives of\ntheir children; and that encourages the values and vision necessary for young\npeople to look forward to and prepare for successful marriage and parenting.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
