{"id":175107,"date":"2022-12-15T05:00:00","date_gmt":"2022-12-15T10:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ifamnews.com\/?p=175107"},"modified":"2022-12-14T10:09:09","modified_gmt":"2022-12-14T15:09:09","slug":"philippines-no-to-un-recommendations-to-legalize-abortion-same-sex-marriage","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ifamnews.com\/en\/philippines-no-to-un-recommendations-to-legalize-abortion-same-sex-marriage","title":{"rendered":"Philippines: No to UN recommendations to legalize abortion, same-sex &#8220;marriage&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The Philippine government said it would not implement the United Nations&#8217; recommendations to legalize abortion, divorce and same-sex marriage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Justice Secretary Jesus Chrispin Remulla told the country&#8217;s largest newspaper, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.manilatimes.net\/2022\/11\/22\/news\/govt-rejects-un-proposal-to-allow-divorce-abortion\/1867196\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Manila Times<\/a><\/em>, that the country is not culturally ready for this: &#8220;Culturally, our values are probably at odds with many of the values they (Western countries) want to impose on us.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Justice Undersecretary Raul Vasquez added that the recommendations were roundly rejected by the Philippine delegation &#8220;because of our national identity, religious beliefs and cultural traditions, as well as Philippine sovereignty, which must be protected and upheld at all times.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The recommendations were made by the United Nations Human Rights Council in the <em>Universal Periodic Review<\/em> published in late November. The periodic review examines progress in the promotion and protection of human rights by the 193 member states through the other member states.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Of the 117 countries that participated in the review this year, only 15 gave negative ratings to the Philippines&#8217; efforts, Remulla said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;These are the usual countries that always pick on the Philippines. They are rich countries from Europe that put a lot, a lot of emphasis on individual rights and have no idea about community rights.
