The Maltese president has announced that he would resign from office rather than sign a law liberalizing abortion, writes the Times of Malta<\/a>, citing sources in the President’s personal circle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

President George Vella, a former physician, responded to the bill on abortion liberalization currently under discussion in Parliament. If adopted, the bill would allow abortion in cases where the mother’s life is in danger (as IFamNews has reported<\/a>). Which cases are considered a “serious risk” is still to be determined by health officials. Until now, abortion has been prohibited in Malta without exception. Under the current legislation, medical treatment of the mother, as a result of which the child unfortunately dies, is allowed and does not count as an abortion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Catholic Church in Malta has sharply criticized the bill. Every human being is valuable from conception to natural death, said Charles Scicluna, the Archbishop of Malta. The right to life of unborn children is “closely linked to the defense of every other human right,” he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
