In commemoration of Mother’s Day and the International Day of Families, IOF has provided the following statement, which is co-signed by organizations around the world, to United Nations ambassadors and their missions.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

More for Motherhood<\/strong>: A Call for Reflection and Recommitment<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe great contribution of women to the welfare of the family and to\nthe development of society,\u201d declared the United Nations in the preamble to its\n1981 treaty on the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination\nagainst Women, is \u201cso far not fully recognized.\u201d Will it ever be? <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhile history books sing the victories of valiant emperors and\nwarriors,\u201d observed Archbishop Bernardito Auza, former Permanent Representative\nof the Holy See, \u201call of civilization\u2026 owes an unpayable debt of gratitude to\nthe less chronicled or even unknown contributions of women that have shaped\ncivilizations, like the silent but constant flow of deep waters that shape\nrivers.\u201d Indeed, \u201chumanity owes its survival to the choice women make not just\nto welcome children, but raise them to be virtuous and authentically human.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Unfortunately, noted the Archbishop, \u201cwe\u2019re living in a time when the\nunique value and dignity of motherhood in some societies is insufficiently\ndefended, appreciated and advanced, leaving women culturally and legally in a position\nto choose between their intellectual and professional development and their\npersonal growth as wives and mothers. Women\u2019s essential contributions to the\ndevelopment of society through their dedication to their family and to raising\nthe next generation is inadequately acknowledged. Sometimes their invisible and\noften heroic service is even disparaged as an antiquated and unwholesome model\nof feminine life.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That this remarkable development is happening even in the United\nNations is a betrayal of the principles it proclaimed shortly after its\nfounding\u2014whose 75th<\/sup> anniversary we observe this year\u2014in the Universal\nDeclaration of Human Rights. The only time the Declaration designates a class\nof rights as \u201cspecial\u201d is when it speaks of motherhood: \u201cMotherhood and childhood are entitled to\nspecial care and assistance.\u201d And the only time the Declaration acknowledges a group\nunit as having rights is when it speaks of family: \u201cThe family is the natural\nand fundamental group unit of society and is entitled to protection by society\nand the State.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This core connection\nbetween motherhood and family was emphasized by then-Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon: \u201cMothers play a critical role in the family, which\nis a powerful force for social cohesion and integration. The mother-child\nrelationship is vital for the healthy development of children…. We face\nmultiple challenges in our changing world, but one factor remains constant: the\ntimeless importance of mothers and their invaluable contribution to raising the\nnext generation.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

But it is a reality that\nhas too often been ignored in the work of the Commission on the Status of\nWomen, whose declaration adopted at this year\u2019s annual meeting\u2014reduced by the\nCOVID-19 crisis from the usual ten-day gathering to a one-day procedural event\u2014fails\neven to mention \u201cmother\u201d or \u201cmotherhood.\u201d The potential repercussions of such\ncontinued failure are ominous, according to Archbishop Auza: \u201cOur future is already mirrored in how we, as individuals and as a\nsociety, support mothers to raise strong and healthy families.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As so many across the\nworld celebrate Mother\u2019s Day in 2020, we urge that this unique convergence with\nUN75 and COVID-19 be a time of reflection and recommitment: reflection on the\nyet-to-be-fully-appreciated role of mothers; and recommitment to provide that\n\u201cspecial care and assistance\u201d to which they are entitled as they fulfill their world-changing\nrole. \u201cFamilies are truly the foundation of society,\u201d said President Ronald\nReagan, \u201cand mothers the vital foundation of the life of the family. Their\ninfluence on the training and education of our youth is so deep and pervasive\nthat it is impossible to measure.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
