A new law passed by the German Bundestag<\/em> has made counseling minors\n(under 18 years of age) with unwanted feelings of same-sex attraction prohibited\nand punishable, labelling all such attempts “conversion therapy.” <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Of course, the law rightly provides that anyone who coerces, threatens, or\ndeceives a young person into seeking \u201cattraction reversal\u201d is also subject to\npunishment, by up to one year in prison or a fine of 30.000 euros. The problem\nis that even voluntarily sought counseling by a young person who wants to rid\nthemselves of undesired attractions is lumped together with such abusive\nbehavior, and any advertising for genuine counseling or help is also\nprohibited.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To Jens Spahn, Germany\u2019s Minister of Health (CDU), since homosexuality is\nnot a disease, “the term therapy is therefore misleading;” Spahn\nmaintains that any treatment would cause severe physical and mental suffering.\n\u201cWhere there is no disease, there is no need for therapy,\u201d says Spahn, adding\nthat the law expresses \u201cthat we accept everyone as they are.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

But this ban goes further than outlawing practices that cause physical or\nmental suffering. It limits young people\u2019s own choices to seek counseling, and\nalso subjects parents to punishment. Any parents who aid a child to seek mitigation\nof unwanted sexual attractions would be seen as failing in their \u201cduty to bring\nup a child.\u201d Jens Brandenburg (FDP) explaines, \u201cAnyone who subjects their own\nchildren to dangerous polarity reversal attempts violates their duty of care\nwithout any ifs and buts.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is a far-reaching victory for the gay lobby, violating not only parents\u2019 right to raise their children, but also religious freedom: prayers for deliverance, for example, are counted under the law among the \u201cdangerous\u201d and now illegal \u201cattempts to reverse attraction.\u201d And the new law explicitly states that the “damage” done by “conversion therapy” can “not be justified by freedom of occupation, therapy or religious freedom.” <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lobbyists have worked hard to broaden the term \u201cconversion therapy,\u201d legally\nconsidered, to be as wide as possible. Even proper education could be\nconsidered punishable \u2013 faith-based psychologists\u2019 or psychotherapists\u2019 who might\nwarn about the moral qualities and dangers of homosexual acts, for instance,\nwould be punished. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

And while it is obvious that actual parental abuse of children with\nhomosexual tendencies must be condemned, this law targets parental rights even\nof those parents who care well for their children. It gives parents little\nrecourse to combat the propaganda taught through the schools, at lobbyists\u2019\nbehest, about sexual inhibition and giving in to any sexual urges, even if parents\nhave deeply held religious beliefs that demand a different sexual ethic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Treatment options are presently still allowed for adults who, in full possession of their mental powers, desire adjustments of their sexual desires. But the LSVD (Association of Lesbians and Gays in Germany) has already announced that it will work to expand the law. They want \u201cconversion therapy\u201d declared illegal without exception, at any age; and they are supported by the Green Party. Ulle Schauws – spokeswoman for \u201cqueer politics\u201d – has already expressed a demand to expand the law.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meanwhile, the law says nothing of the dangers to children and adolescents brought\nabout by a barrage of sexual propaganda in schools. For years, the subjects of\ngender, \u201csexual diversity\u201d and trans-sexuality have been introduced into school\nlessons in almost all of the federal states, some with extremely graphic and\nideological content. What of the effects of this \u201csex education,\u201d highly\npoliticized, on young minds; not to mention the early sexualization of children?\nParents are already denied the right to take a primary role in this matter; and\nnow with this law their recourse to respond to such propaganda is taken away.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sexuality is presented in schools as merely source of pleasure and energy,\nand that from an early age. In 2015 in Germany, school material entitled \u201cReal\ndiversity under the rainbow<\/em>\u201d had to be withdrawn because it was \u201cnot\nsuitable for schools,\u201d when for once parent\u2019s protest had succeeded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is practically inevitable that, with the passage of this new law,\nchildren will become even easier prey for ideologues and sexual radicals. It\nwill be ever harded for parents to promote in children an integrated and\nnatural sexuality and to accompany them through unsafe or uncertain passages in\nlife.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
