{"id":151977,"date":"2022-07-08T06:40:12","date_gmt":"2022-07-08T10:40:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ifamnews.com\/?p=151977"},"modified":"2022-07-08T06:40:13","modified_gmt":"2022-07-08T10:40:13","slug":"mexico-first-abortion-and-gay-marriage-now-euthanasia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ifamnews.com\/en\/mexico-first-abortion-and-gay-marriage-now-euthanasia","title":{"rendered":"Mexico: first abortion and gay &#8220;marriage,&#8221; now euthanasia"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p id=\"h-nientemeno-che-un-intera-settimana-tutta-dedicata-all-eutanasia\">No less than an entire week, all dedicated to euthanasia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"h-accade-in-messico-dove-la-camera-dei-deputati-ha-ospitato-da-luned-20-a-venerd-24-giugno-la-semana-nacional-de-la-eutanasia-una-serie-di-conferenze-e-dibattiti-fra-legislatori-accademici-ed-esperti-a-vario-titolo-finalizzati-esplicitamente-ad-aprire-la-strada-a-una-legislazione-che-disciplini-il-suicidio-assistito-per-i-malati-terminali\">In Mexico, from June 20 to 24 (Monday-Friday), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canaldelcongreso.gob.mx\/noticias\/15512\/Semana_Nacional_de_la_Eutanasia_en_la_Cmara_de_Diputados\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the Chamber of Deputies hosted the National Week of Euthanasia<\/a>, a series of conferences and discussions among legislators, academics and experts in various capacities, aimed explicitly at paving the way for legislation to regulate &#8220;assisted suicide&#8221; for the terminally ill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"h-accade-in-messico-dove-la-camera-dei-deputati-ha-ospitato-da-luned-20-a-venerd-24-giugno-la-semana-nacional-de-la-eutanasia-una-serie-di-conferenze-e-dibattiti-fra-legislatori-accademici-ed-esperti-a-vario-titolo-finalizzati-esplicitamente-ad-aprire-la-strada-a-una-legislazione-che-disciplini-il-suicidio-assistito-per-i-malati-terminali\">&#8220;Organized by Emmanuel Reyes Carmona, an MP of the Morena party [National Regeneration Movement], and head of the Health Commission&#8221;, <a href=\"https:\/\/mexiconewsdaily.com\/news\/debate-opens-on-legalization-of-euthanasia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reports the<em> Mexico News Daily<\/em><\/a>, &#8220;the week-long conference is an opportunity for its supporters to plead the case for laws on end-of-life issues and to introduce the option of &#8216;assisted suicide&#8217; and euthanasia nationwide.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"h-accade-in-messico-dove-la-camera-dei-deputati-ha-ospitato-da-luned-20-a-venerd-24-giugno-la-semana-nacional-de-la-eutanasia-una-serie-di-conferenze-e-dibattiti-fra-legislatori-accademici-ed-esperti-a-vario-titolo-finalizzati-esplicitamente-ad-aprire-la-strada-a-una-legislazione-che-disciplini-il-suicidio-assistito-per-i-malati-terminali\">Currently, neither &#8220;assisted suicide&#8221; nor euthanasia is legal in the country, but since 2008 some states in the Mexican Union,  with the <a href=\"https:\/\/salute.aduc.it\/eutanasia\/notizia\/eutanasia+citta+messico+riconosce+diritto_133331.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">capital Mexico City in the lead<\/a>, closely followed by the states of Aguascalientes and Michoac\u00e1n, have allowed terminally ill patients to refuse medication and any other life-prolonging medical treatment, with what is called &#8220;passive euthanasia.&#8221; If the patient is unconscious, this right is extended to family members.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"h-accade-in-messico-dove-la-camera-dei-deputati-ha-ospitato-da-luned-20-a-venerd-24-giugno-la-semana-nacional-de-la-eutanasia-una-serie-di-conferenze-e-dibattiti-fra-legislatori-accademici-ed-esperti-a-vario-titolo-finalizzati-esplicitamente-ad-aprire-la-strada-a-una-legislazione-che-disciplini-il-suicidio-assistito-per-i-malati-terminali\">Similar to <a href=\"https:\/\/ifamnews.com\/en\/another-mexican-state-legalizes-abortion\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">abortion<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/ifamnews.com\/en\/mass-gay-marriage-for-100-mexican-couples\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">same-sex &#8220;marriage<\/a>,&#8221; states handle these issues differently and independently, and it is not prohibited for citizens to move from one part of the Union to another to have abortions, to &#8220;marry,&#8221; or to die.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"h-accade-in-messico-dove-la-camera-dei-deputati-ha-ospitato-da-luned-20-a-venerd-24-giugno-la-semana-nacional-de-la-eutanasia-una-serie-di-conferenze-e-dibattiti-fra-legislatori-accademici-ed-esperti-a-vario-titolo-finalizzati-esplicitamente-ad-aprire-la-strada-a-una-legislazione-che-disciplini-il-suicidio-assistito-per-i-malati-terminali\">The comparison with abortion appears in Reyes Carmona&#8217;s words, &#8220;Euthanasia is not legal just like abortion. Abortion in our country is banned [at the federal level] and yet it continues to be practiced [in some states]. I believe that even if euthanasia is not regulated in this country, the practice will continue,&#8221; he said, adding that it should be &#8220;an option for any terminally ill person who wishes to die with dignity.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"h-accade-in-messico-dove-la-camera-dei-deputati-ha-ospitato-da-luned-20-a-venerd-24-giugno-la-semana-nacional-de-la-eutanasia-una-serie-di-conferenze-e-dibattiti-fra-legislatori-accademici-ed-esperti-a-vario-titolo-finalizzati-esplicitamente-ad-aprire-la-strada-a-una-legislazione-che-disciplini-il-suicidio-assistito-per-i-malati-terminali\">Paulina Rivero Weber, a researcher at the Faculty of Medicine at the National Autonomous University (UNAM), made an economic case for it. Namely, she called the end-of-life legislation &#8220;a matter of equity.&#8221; Since wealthier Mexican citizens can still access euthanasia by moving elsewhere or &#8220;[&#8230;] reaching an agreement with a doctor friend to have the procedure performed in a private hospital without hassle,&#8221;
