After Scotland<\/a>, it is now the turn of England and Wales. The most recent statistics<\/a>, i.e., those showing 2021 figures on the number of abortions in the United Kingdom were released on 21 June.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As many as 214,869 voluntary terminations of pregnancy were reported in 2021, the highest number since the procedure became legal in Britain with the passage of the Abortion Act <\/a> in 1967. Chilling numbers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2021, 99 percent of abortions in England and Wales were funded by the National Health Service (NHS), although 77 percent of the total were performed in the private sector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 87 percent of cases, the procedure was performed as a chemical or pharmacological abortion, a slight increase from the 2020 figure of 85 percent.
