As of today in Lombardy, there have been \u201conly\u201d 12,500 deaths; in Italy a little more than 23,000. Lombardy and New York <a href=\"https:\/\/coronavirus.jhu.edu\/us-map\">are completely different<\/a> according to policies and the approach to this emergency, but the number of dead people is similar. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many hospitals in\nLombardy have closed their Covid-19 units. We have seen more and more musical\ntributes thanking doctors and nurses; for example, there is this violin solo\nconcert on the Cremona hospital roof, where actually there are still many\npatients: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"jeg_video_container jeg_video_content\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Coronavirus, Cremona: la violinista suona sul tetto dell&#039;ospedale\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ese942oRc6c?start=14&#038;feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Lombardy, Veneto,\nPiedmont, Liguria and Emilia Romagna are the most productive regions in the\ncountry; the governors are fighting to allow the resumption of work activities\nand re-establishment free movement of goods and persons. The <a href=\"https:\/\/aljazeera.com\/programmes\/newsfeed\/2020\/03\/trump-defends-calling-coronavirus-chinese-virus-200323102618665.html\">Chinese\nvirus<\/a> has affected the rest of Italy less than this region, but the central\ngovernment does not want to admit the necessity of different reactions to the\nemergency and the specific needs of Northern Italy; this just adds insult to\ninjury. The virus has <a href=\"https:\/\/it.businessinsider.com\/case-di-riposo-per-anziani-coronavirus-italia\/\">especially\naffected<\/a> especially old people in residential or nursing homes all around\nEurope, from Sweden to Belgium, from UK to Italy, and many of them have died. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The EU is on the verge\nof collapse. Poland and Hungary are two scapegoats: but contrary to the\ncriticism against those countries\u2014that they are acting selfishly and without\nsolidarity\u2014really the countries that <em>are<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/gatestoneinstitute.org\/15892\/eu-failure-coronavirus\">behaving\nthis way<\/a> are the Netherlands, Germany, Finland, Luxemburg and Austria. The\ndanger of populism is leading to reactions against the same countries that have\npromoted it; egoism <a href=\"https:\/\/cnbc.com\/2020\/04\/08\/corona-bonds-reasons-why-germany-and-the-netherlands-oppose-the-idea.html\">has\naffected<\/a> the paladins of \u201cEuropean democratic centralism\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Italian people, and especially the people of Lombardy, love concrete\nactions, solidarity, and care for others, including the care of souls,\nespecially for old and infirm people. But, we are still not allowed to take\npart in religious services. One brave priest in Lombardy celebrated Mass with\nthe participation of a dozen of the relatives of the Covid victims in his town\nin spite&nbsp; of these restrictions: Don Lino\nViola was conscious of the sanctions he might received, and slammed police who\nbroke up the Mass. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"jeg_video_container jeg_video_content\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Militari fanno irruzione in Chiesa durante la messa. In my own family, we have experienced such courage: Covid-19 has hit close to home. My brother\u2019s wife is a doctor in a nursing home and contracted the virus from one of the 40 old people there. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ifamnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/IMG-20200402-WA0005-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-14833\" width=\"375\" height=\"500\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ifamnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/IMG-20200402-WA0005-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/ifamnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/IMG-20200402-WA0005-1152x1536.jpg 1152w, https:\/\/ifamnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/IMG-20200402-WA0005-750x1000.jpg 750w, https:\/\/ifamnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/IMG-20200402-WA0005-1140x1520.jpg 1140w, https:\/\/ifamnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/IMG-20200402-WA0005.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 375px) 100vw, 375px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>She was aware of this possibility, but it was important for her to stay with the elderly residents in the home and not leave them alone. For now, Nicoletta is well, and we her family are getting by also.
