By the end of the year, legislation restricting the use of chemical abortion is likely to be passed in Louisiana.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/legis.la.gov\/legis\/BillInfo.aspx?i=242687\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">House Bill 388<\/a>, sponsored by Republican Senator Sharon Hewitt, seeks to prohibit medical personnel from prescribing abortion pills online or over the phone, as well as sending them by mail. Measures against the crime of induced chemical abortion are also included in the draft.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first green light for House Bill 388 came from the Louisiana Senate Judiciary C Committee, with three votes for and one against.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Louisiana&#8217;s uniqueness is in the pro-life stances of most of its congresspersons, including many Democrats. Governor John Bel Edwards, though a Democrat, is also opposed to abortion, so everything points to a decidedly downhill road for the new norm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Mothers more protected<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Under the provisions of Senator Hewitt&#8217;s bill, the abortion pill may only be prescribed by a physician in the presence of the pregnant woman. This would be a rule in conflict with the regulations of the Food and Drug Administration, which <a href=\"https:\/\/ifamnews.com\/it\/gli-usa-di-biden-pi-kill-pill-per-tutti\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">in December allowed the distribution of abortion pills by mail<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The second part of the Hewitt bill envisages stricter penalties (fines from $5,000 to $100,000 and imprisonment from 5 to 50 years) for those who cause serious injury or death to a pregnant woman.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The effect of this bill is it explicitly allows for criminal prosecution of a pregnant person,&#8221; said <a href=\"https:\/\/lailluminator.com\/2022\/04\/12\/louisiana-lawmakers-consider-more-restrictions-for-abortion-pill\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Ellie Schilling<\/a>, a New Orleans attorney who advises abortion clinics in Louisiana. <a href=\"https:\/\/lailluminator.com\/2022\/04\/12\/louisiana-lawmakers-consider-more-restrictions-for-abortion-pill\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Senator Hewitt<\/a> quickly responded, stating that &#8220;it is not our intention to punish a pregnant woman in any way.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-pill-is-the-real-battlefield\"><strong>The pill is the real battlefield<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the pro-abortion <a href=\"https:\/\/ifamnews.com\/en?p=128217\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Guttmacher<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/ifamnews.com\/en?p=128217\"> <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/ifamnews.com\/en?p=128217\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Institute<\/a>, more than half of the terminations performed last year in the United States were chemical abortions, which is a sufficient reason for <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/abortion-science-health-medication-56972af9e9b0fc2fc97e06041f6e96ce\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">at least sixteen states to place restrictions on the use of abortion pills<\/a>.
