The program in <a href=\"https:\/\/childrenshealthdefense.org\/defender\/gmo-mosquitoes-released-in-florida\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Monroe County in Florida<\/a> is being extended from last spring, and expanded across Fresno, Tulare, San Bernadino and Stanislaus Counties in California.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Environmentalists called last year&#8217;s release a &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/childrenshealthdefense.org\/defender\/gmo-mosquitoes-released-in-florida\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">dark moment in history<\/a>&#8220;, citing that no sufficient scientific study was done to investigate the supposed benefits and the potential harms of the experiment. Moreover, critics viewed the move as having nothing to do with safety but with maximizing profits for the biotech giant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Oxitec maintains <meta charset=\"utf-8\"><em>Aedes aegypti<\/em> mosquitoes are being genetically modified with the goal of reducing the transmission of harmful diseases like dengue, Zika and yellow fever. The male species, which do not bite, would be released into the wild to mate with females which do bite. The company says the resulting offspring, regardless of sex, will not survive to reach maturity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are issues which draw suspicion to Oxitec&#8217;s plan: The Aedes aegypti mosquito is not prevalent in California, and the state\u2013according to the Centers for Disease Control\u2013does not have any cases of the harmful diseases listed.<br><br>Said <em><a href=\"https:\/\/foe.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Friends of the Earth<\/a><\/em> environmentalist and California resident Dana Perls, \u201cScientists have found genetic material from GE mosquitoes in wild populations at significant levels, which means GE mosquitoes are not sterile. GE mosquitoes could result in far more health and environmental problems than they would solve&#8230; (the) EPA needs to do a real review of potential risks and stop ignoring widespread opposition in the communities where releases will happen.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While Oxitec states the GE insects will reduce incidence of the mosquito-borne diseases, there is no publicly available data that supports their claim. As well, Yale University scientists conducted an independent <a href=\"https:\/\/u12097671.ct.sendgrid.net\/ls\/click?upn=9rudYHeevExQpJ5A1h-2BA7ZwFLXeEqFrHYClceTHZEErrQhzJN33D3HBB-2B8G-2Ff5Nf-2F-2FOLeqwC-2BmQsHI2FzYxxiQ-3D-3DB9Gw_6Noc08JCLckBnQKYaMA7QhHoUhZ-2FQ-2BRzdbpeCX1kWXZIQFm0nrQjuzyGP5wOGWtF93sWuq8kgBYFamtG7QZwaR2hWxZxqOKNeawoHY3S7leo6JOuonKBWyS4PtvhtzHHpnqizZ52k0XH070mOSNrlfYtRvajSahYpxNblazZpsNC-2Bzf7eRocG9nInOVtQ05tXqQiXcuuXCvqzTlbv6J3vHBrpfDJeEgkqZc-2Bbo2jpWknv-2F-2BnUC0pOCHNrpuNw4i5i7Cm8m57KHWgTRGneiA0WZt1Eo1hxTjt-2Fn5BesEIy3RPJjNci0XweJknBo6Msjft-2BKOXQLvyozimzYqHEETWHoGWXLAr3DK-2BlYKmDJu-2FikoNuLcl9Nh8PuRBRGfjWUv-2F4f6yLhZG6ESbjZBqDpPSHh2rlhukOFkU5GSO7G78yCMEKwPPSv1M1vSgr07GxcAJrQF9ayVkINnmuWLHI0eTfvjVdTDBJ5qky6h-2BbsgOpv3ZHd-2FbNsPvu7BGJ-2FGp9q1xzzAcglwDdUSgEnkaeu-2BGJR8Wp2CL6WRtprXkV-2Bm4-2FwlGrp2IrD5CTm834vMRkDab\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">peer-reviewed study<\/a> on GE mosquitoes. It revealed that over two years of continual releases at a test site in Brazil failed to reduce populations of <em>Aedes aegypti<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to <em><a href=\"https:\/\/childrenshealthdefense.org\/defender\/billions-gmo-mosquitoes-california-florida\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Defender<\/a><\/em>: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The EPA did not publicly release any data from Oxitec field trials in Florida or Brazil and key information about health effects, including allergenicity and toxicity, was redacted from the company\u2019s application for a permit. <\/li><li>The EPA did not require key scientific assessments, including an endangered species assessment, public health impact analysis or caged trials ahead of any environmental release. The EPA declined to convene a Scientific Advisory Panel as it does for other new pesticides.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Next, California&#8217;s Department of Pesticide Regulation will have their say on whether to approve the permit. If that passes, billions of GE mosquitoes will be released over a 2-year period in those 4 counties in California.
