The governor has ordered the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services (DFPS) to launch investigations into \u201cany reported instances of Texas children being subjected to abusive gender-transitioning procedures,\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Directing <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TexasDFPS?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@TexasDFPS<\/a> to conduct prompt &amp; thorough investigations of any reported instances of Texas children being subjected to abusive gender-transitioning procedures.<a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/cWqC3AyQCq\">https:\/\/t.co\/cWqC3AyQCq<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Governor Abbott Press Office (@GovAbbottPress) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GovAbbottPress\/status\/1496231235416469505?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 22, 2022<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Abbott&#8217;s declaration requires all licensed professionals who come into contact with children, from doctors to teachers, to report any child abuse, which now includes these transgender drugs and surgeries, or face criminal punishment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This decision comes one day after Paxton announced in an&nbsp;advisory opinion&nbsp;that transgender \u201csex change\u201d practices for minors constitute child abuse under the Texas Family Code, which prohibits physical, mental, and emotional injuries to a child.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Paxton\u2019s opinion applies to genital mutilation surgeries, mastectomies, and any other procedures that involve \u201cremoving from children otherwise healthy or non-diseased body part or tissue,\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cEach of the \u2018sex change\u2019 procedures and treatments enumerated above, when performed on children, can legally constitute child abuse\u201d under state law, the Republican attorney general wrote. \u201cWhen considering questions of child abuse, a court would likely consider the fundamental right to procreation, issues of physical and emotional harm associated with these procedures and treatments, consent laws in Texas and throughout the country, and existing child abuse standards.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe Texas Family Code is clear \u2014 causing or permitting substantial harm to the child or the child\u2019s growth and development is child abuse.
