{"id":12556,"date":"2020-03-24T15:00:00","date_gmt":"2020-03-24T20:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ifamnews.com\/?p=12556"},"modified":"2020-03-24T11:30:22","modified_gmt":"2020-03-24T16:30:22","slug":"save-the-children","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ifamnews.com\/en\/save-the-children","title":{"rendered":"Save the Children!"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>As the worldwide pandemic continues to crescendo, the impact on children is becoming ever more tragic. \u201cIn a matter of months, COVID-19 has upended the lives of children and families across the globe,\u201d said a UNICEF <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/unicef.org\/eap\/press-releases\/covid-19-children-heightened-risk-abuse-neglect-exploitation-and-violence-amidst\" target=\"_blank\">press release<\/a> on March 20 announcing extensive guidelines for the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/unicef.org\/media\/65991\/file\/Technical%20note:%20Protection%20of%20children%20during%20the%20coronavirus%20disease%202019%20(COVID-19)%20pandemic.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">Protection of Children during the Coronavirus Pandemic<\/a>. \u201cHundreds of millions of children around the world will likely face increasing threats to their safety and wellbeing\u2014including mistreatment, gender-based violence, exploitation, social exclusion and separation from caregivers\u2014because of actions taken to contain the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic. UNICEF is urging governments to ensure the safety and wellbeing of children amidst the intensifying socioeconomic fallout from the disease.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Besides urging that \u201cthe protection of all\nchildren [be] given the utmost consideration in disease control measures,\u201d\nUNICEF warns that, \u201cIn many ways, the disease is now reaching children and\nfamilies far beyond those it directly infects. Schools are closing. Parents are\nstruggling to care for their children and make ends meet. The protection risks\nfor children are mounting.\u201d Addressing such challenges, the guidelines systematically\nidentify various aspects of child protection risks and offer extensive suggestions\nfor working across sectors and in cooperation with governments, emphasizing health,\nhygiene, nutrition, and education. The guidelines further recommend various priority\nchild protection actions, emphasizing the role of family (a term that is\nundefined), and conclude by providing access to further resources. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Convinced that, as stated by the United Nations in its <a href=\"https:\/\/cirp.org\/library\/ethics\/UN-declaration\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">Declaration of the Rights of the Child<\/a>, \u201cmankind owes to the child the best it has to give,\u201d we at the International Organization for the Family applaud the UNICEF guidelines while also pointing out that the declaration states that every child should, \u201cwherever possible, grow up in the care and under the responsibility of his [or her] parents.\u201d The reason is apparent. Referring to the \u201cnuclear family\u201d (defined by the Oxford Advanced Learners Dictionary as consisting of a father, a mother and their children), University of Virginia Professor Bradford Wilcox <a href=\"https:\/\/theatlantic.com\/ideas\/archive\/2020\/02\/nuclear-family-still-indispensable\/606841\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">observes<\/a>, \u201cA nuclear family headed by two loving married parents remains the most stable and safest environment for raising children.\u201d  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For a child to grow up with her or his married mother and father is more than a good idea; it is, <a href=\"https:\/\/scholarsarchive.byu.edu\/cgi\/viewcontent.cgi?referer=https:\/\/google.com\/url?sa=t&amp;rct=j&amp;q=&amp;esrc=s&amp;source=web&amp;cd=1&amp;ved=2ahUKEwiXpOy-5bHoAhXAGTQIHfZOCScQFjAAegQIBRAB&amp;url=http%3A%2F%2Fscholarsarchive.byu.edu%2Fcgi%2Fviewcontent.cgi%3Farticle%3D1064%26context%3Dmarriageandfamilies&amp;usg=AOvVaw1YrbPhbGkpU2WJfHP7WLow&amp;httpsredir=1&amp;article=1064&amp;context=marriageandfamilies\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">explains<\/a> IOF founder Dr. Allan Carlson, what every child really needs and is entitled to: \u201cEach child has a right to a mother. Each child has a right to a father.
