Parents are often guilty of putting their own relationship on hold while they focus time, attention, and other resources on raising their children. That may be a dire mistake, according to new research<\/a> based in Nepal, where a team of Canadian and American researchers discovered that self-reported parental affection was associated with children\u2019s greater educational attainment and later marriage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For their analysis<\/a>, the researchers used survey data from the Chitwan Valley Family Study, which began in 1995 in the Western Chitwan Valley region of Nepal. Married couples were asked (separately but simultaneously) to rate the \u201clevel of affection they had for their partner\u201d by answering the question, \u201cHow much do you love your (husband\/wife)? Very much, some, a little, or not at all?\u201d The researchers then followed the children of these couples for 12 years, to determine what impact their parents\u2019 relationship had on their own life trajectory. \u201cWe find,\u201d the researchers summarize, \u201cthat children whose parents report strong marital affection and less spousal conflict attain higher levels of education and marry later than children whose parents do not.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cFamily isn\u2019t\njust another institution,\u201d reported lead researcher Sarah Brauner-Otto. \u201cIt\u2019s\nnot like a school or employer. It is this place where we also have emotions and\nfeelings. . . . Demonstrating and providing evidence that love, this emotional\ncomponent of family, also has this long impact on children\u2019s lives is really\nimportant for understanding the depth of family influence on children.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\nresearchers\u2019 next task is to determine how, exactly, parental love operates to\nhelp children delay marriage and earn more education. They \u201cspeculate that when\nparents love each other, they tend to invest more in their children, leading to\nchildren remaining in education longer.\u201d In addition, the researchers also\nposit that when home lives are happier, children are less likely to want to\n\u201cescape\u201d to their own marriages too early, and also more likely to view their\nparents\u2019 high-quality marriage as something worth waiting to achieve. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Whatever the\nreason, the implications are clear. In Nepal\u2014which still has a high rate of\narranged marriages, and where most children have fewer years of formal education\u2014the\nimpact of a loving marriage on children is clear. Parents around the world\nwould do well to heed this advice, and put in the effort to make their own\nmarriages more loving. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
