{"id":11165,"date":"2020-03-11T13:33:23","date_gmt":"2020-03-11T18:33:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ifamnews.com\/?p=11165"},"modified":"2020-03-16T14:25:52","modified_gmt":"2020-03-16T19:25:52","slug":"dont-forget-the-family","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ifamnews.com\/en\/dont-forget-the-family","title":{"rendered":"Don\u2019t Forget the Family"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"last-updated\">Last updated on March 16th, 2020 at 02:25 pm<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><em>In advance of the 53<sup>rd<\/sup> session of the United Nations Commission on Population and Development, IOF has issued the following statement, which has been provided to ambassadors and their missions in New York. <\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>On March\n6, 2020, the UN Commission on Population and Development issued its initial\ndraft (\u201czero draft\u201d) resolution on the theme \u201cPopulation, food security,\nnutrition and sustainable development\u201d in advance of its upcoming annual session\nscheduled to begin March 30. The International Organization for the Family applauds\nthe Commission\u2019s efforts to end malnutrition and hunger, and particularly commends\nrecognition of \u201cthe special nutritional needs among young pregnant women\u201d (OP11).\nAt the same time, IOF urges focus on the family as the key to development, and calls\nfor deletion of certain language whose effect would be to undermine family. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Of the draft\u2019s\nonly two occurrences of the word \u201cfamily,\u201d the first is part of a laudable plea\nto end child marriage and ensure \u201cthat all young women have the opportunity to\ngrow into adulthood before starting a family\u201d (OP11). The second occurrence is\ndramatically different: a reference to \u201cfamily planning\u201d in a paragraph calling\nfor \u201cuniversal access to\nsexual and reproductive health and reproductive rights\u201d (OP12). The danger of\nsuch language was underscored in a <a href=\"https:\/\/hhs.gov\/about\/agencies\/oga\/global-health-diplomacy\/protecting-life-global-health-policy\/joint-statement-unga\/index.html\">Joint Statement on Universal Health\nCoverage<\/a> made to last\nyear\u2019s General Assembly by twenty-one nations: the United\nStates of America, Bahrain, Belarus, Brazil, Democratic Republic of the Congo,\nEgypt, Guatemala, Haiti, Hungary, Iraq, Libya, Mali, Nigeria, Poland, Republic\nof the Congo, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Uganda, United Arab Emirates, and\nYemen. They declared,\ninter alia: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe\nbelieve that health of women, men, children and adolescents supports and\nimproves the overall health of our families and communities, and that <strong>the family is the foundational institution\nof society and thus should be supported and strengthened<\/strong>\u2026. To make the most\nmeaningful progress without delay or dissension, we respectfully call upon\nMember States to <strong>join us in\nconcentrating on topics that unite rather than divide<\/strong> on the critical\nissues\u2026 <strong>We do not support references to\nambiguous terms and expressions, such as sexual and reproductive health and\nrights<\/strong> in U.N. documents, because <strong>they\ncan undermine the critical role of the family and promote practices, like\nabortion<\/strong>, in circumstances that do not enjoy international consensus and\nwhich can be misinterpreted by U.N. agencies.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To\nundermine the family would be to undermine the very development the Commission\nis seeking to effectuate, for, as is well established, the family is <strong>\u201cthe fundamental agent for sustainable\nsocial, economic, and cultural development\u201d<\/strong> (the <a href=\"https:\/\/difi.org.qa\/doha-declaration\/\">Doha Declaration<\/a>), <strong>\u201cthe main instrument of societal\ntransformation\u201d<\/strong> (Ambassador Iftekhar Chowdhury to GA, 6 December 2004), and\n<strong>\u201ca vital partner\u201d in efforts to achieve\ninternational development goals<\/strong> (<a href=\"https:\/\/un.org\/sg\/en\/content\/sg\/statement\/2004-12-06\/remarks-general-assembly-tenth-anniversary-international-year-family\">statement\nof Secretary-General<\/a> to GA, 6 December 2004). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We further\ncall attention to the <a href=\"https:\/\/sustainabledevelopment.un.org\/content\/documents\/12348Joint%20statement-friends%20of%20the%20family.pdf\">statement\nby Group of Friends of the Family<\/a> made prior to the 2015 summit on\nthe Sustainable Development Goals: \u201cWe reaffirm [the truth\nrecognized by the Universal Declaration of Human Rights] that the family is the\n<strong>natural and fundamental group unit of\nsociety<\/strong> and is entitled to protection by society and the State.
